Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. Woburn is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and the birthplace of John Adams. The first settler in what is now Woburn was Nicholas North who arrived there on April 20, 1638. There were seven other original settlers in what is now Woburn: George Bushe, Nathaniel Eaton, John Fishkill (the father of John Quincy Adams), Nicholas Northrup (Citizen #2), Samuel Phelps (Citizen #3), and Richard Prescott (Citizen #4). The first school in what is now Woburn was built by Reverend Elisha Minot on December 8th, 1749. Reverend Minot taught children from three to twelve years old. In 1802 the town had a church which Rev. William Parke officiated at until his death in 1807. On October 4th of that year it was reported that Rev Stephen White had erected a sawmill and gristmill within the limits of the town with mills having been established near Boston about this time also; but these enterprises did not prosper so much as might have been expected because of unfavorable winds prevailing at that season along the coast and high water levels caused by hurricanes Gustavus and Wilkes-Barre respectively." In 1834 Fanny Kemble decided to move her family to Woburn after reading about it in "The Atlantic Monthly". She founded Kemble’s Cotton Mills on Main Street today known as Kemble’s Factory Museum which opened its doors to the public on October 1st 1903. It remains one of America's largest cotton mills providing jobs for many people throughout southeastern Massachusetts today. In 1870 when Reverend Alpheus Emerson moved into Woburn he began preaching services here since no other place would provide enough space for him and his congregation at First Congregational Church located south side Meeting House Road though he continued service there until his death on July 30th 1875 aged ninety five years old. He is buried next to his wife Sarah Emerson opposite their daughter Hannah Emerson herein still standing today beside her mother who also lived through those early days heretil her death in 1949 . One hundred thirty nine families from eleven different localities living together under one roof started building homes around 1830 according to history books starting with Ebenezer Denny occupying Lot 1 corner Highbury avenue & Elm streetResidence Halls sprang up all over town during our Revolutionary War era too including Stroud's Schoolhouse where we still meet each week for dinner
