The area that now makes up Woburn was first settled by Dutch Americans in the early 16th century. In 1764, US troops burned down a Dutch farmstead in what is now Woburn after they captured it from the Indians during the Indian War of 1763-1765. The town's first store opened in 1853. It became a city in 1924 when it merged with Needham to form one municipality. Woburn is home to several historically significant sites, including: • Stonington Well (1615), which was where English General John Graves Simcoe kept his headquarters during the American Revolution • The needham village Meeting House (1828), which served as both the municipal building and church for Needham until 1892 • Emerson Chapel (1912), which contains a well-preserved example of Victorian Gothic architecture • Soldier's Field (1895), which hosted games such as "The Hermitage" and "A Hundred Years from Now" before being converted into a parkland space
