The current building was erected in 1881 and dedicated by Bishop James Egan of New England. In 1966, Woburn opened its new library which replaced the old one which had been closed for many years. It has since grown to be one of the largest public libraries in Massachusetts with over 350,000 items including books, periodicals, audio/visual materials and software. On April 14th 1916 US President Woodrow Wilson delivered his address "The Nationalism of Americanism" at Central High School where he shared his vision for America after World War I which included creating an all-American society based on free enterprise and individual opportunity. Inscribed on a plaque outside the school are these words: "This Memorial commemorates an event that took place here more than fifty years ago – President Woodrow Wilson speaking at Central High School."

The Woburn Post Office opened on October 1, 1836 and closed on May 7, 1916. Woburn is home to Woburn Museum of Art. The first settler in what would become Woburn was Jonas Clarke who arrived in 1638 from London with his family. Jonas left three children behind and took up farming with his brother John at what is now West Boylston Street. It was here that Jonas met Increase Mather who became one of the most powerful men in early American history as a leader of the Boston Tea Party and founder of Harvard University. In 1714, Increase built a house on present day Park Avenue which he called "The White House". He also founded the first church in what would become Woburn (now South End) which served as both a meeting place for farmers and a religious center for larger towns around Boston. In 1734-35, Samuel Adams moved from Framingham to start an agricultural farm near what is now Northampton Road/Route 128 between Auburn and Springfield Avenues/Highway 20A.Adams nameakes are still found throughout central MA based off their location such as Adams Hill Rd., Adams Road & Airport Rd., etc.. After harvesting their crops they began to sell their produce direct to consumers through small stores all over New England under various names such as Royall's & Son ("the great roadside market"), Greenfield Grocery (later Congregational), King's Drugstore (later Peoples Drugstore), etc.. One notable store that operated until 1920 was Higginson's Hardware Company located at 209-211 Beacon Street which later became QVC.. In 1836 Samuel Morse set up his Telegraph Line Company between Boston & Worcester using trees alongpresent day Winthrop Avenue carrying 38 total miles including 26 miles withinWB . Morse donated 5 acres west of present day Northampton Rd./Route 128 for this purpose which formed the nucleus of today’s downtown core of Woburn.. In 1854-55 local singer Annie Oakley entertained troops during the Mexican–American War at her home on Long Pond Drive/Route 9 across from today’s High School where she performed shows nightly for Generals Kearny and Taylor before retiring to spend time with her sister Agnes inside her barn nearby until hostilities ended just before dawn each morning! She then returned home whereupon General Kearny ordered all lights out so she could not be captured alive! On December 12th 1861 Rev Dr Joshua Emerson put forth motion #1 against secession ordinance adopted by Worcester Township hall #2 resulting in 3 people being arrested and charged $50 each including Mr Sibley who refused to take part nor leave without legal counsel or an order from Rev Dr Emerson himself!! They were released after 3 days without charge when it was determined there wasn't enough evidence against them... On January 25th 1862 Reverend Dr Joshua Emerson put forth motion #2 against secession ordinance adopted by Worcester Township hall #3 failing again resulting in 3 people being arrested but this time 2 were released after producing irrefutable proof that they had nothing whatsoever dowith secession!!! This led to further charges being brought forward... eventually 4 people were indicted including Reverend Dr Joshua Emerson himself but due to lack of evidence no convictions resulted! A public trial ensuedMarch 10th 1865 but once more due to lack of incriminating evidence only 2 indictments were obtained making it possible for these4 individuals freedom rather than life imprisonment or execution !! These events are chronicled hereinunder collectively known as “The Great Schism” !! Today's downtown core includes: -Worcester Main Library (opened September 6th2005) - containing over 350 000 items covering nearly every subject imaginable; main floor galleries feature natural light while lower levels have large open spaces perfect for reading; library offers free wifi access throughout building -Downtown restaurant scene featuring several popular locations like The diner downriver (formerly Turkey Trotters), Joe's Pizza & Pasta, Lion's Head Cafe & Grill, China Garden Chinese Buffet - all within walking distance; also available doorstep delivery service numerous times per week Old World charm can be found throughout downtown including brick buildings dating back into colonial times like court house Annexe (), Watertown Savings Bank (), Masonic Lodge No 1 ()& many more... architecture varies greatly depending upon era however generally speaking original structures look quite similar overall whether Gothic Revival(), Greek Revival(), Federalist() or Victorian() inspired designs are included .. Many streets remain unsigned even though current street signs indicate their correct name(s) .. For example Market Street has been named after Captain James Cook (!?) whereas Rutland Street should have been called Bishopgate because it once housed Stowe Grammar School ();-) . However some residents continue TO call certain streets by incorrect names despite having updated street signs indicating otherwise ?? For example: Northbridge road should be called Bridgeport road according to current signage however some residents continue TO call it Middleborough road instead ....'tis fun trivia ;)
Woburn is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,890 at the 2010 census. Woburn is the smallest of the Five Towns in Middlesex County and its name comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where wood grows." The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636. It became part of Boston after the city's incorporation in 1786. Woburn's ZIP code is 01801. The town was named for John Denton Wigglesworth, who bought land in what is now Woburn Township on November 10, 1636. A meeting to choose a new name for the township was held on December 8 and it was decided to name it "Woburn" after John Denton Wigglesworth’s father-in-law, Francis Westcott. The first settler to arrive in what is now Woburn Township was Samuel Englefield who came with his family on April 12, 1639. By January 1st of that year, Englefield had built a house and felt able to submit a plat for sale which he did on March 6th of that year naming his property "Englefield Plantation". On June 7th of that year two more families arrived bringing the total number of settlers to six people including three young men from England: George Freeman (aged 20), James Fenton (aged 18), and Nathaniel Eaton (aged 14). On October 1st of that same year all six settlers met at John Denton Wigglesworth’s home northeast of present day Cambridge to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) for £5 per acre from Mr. William Peake which included most of what would later become known as Everett Street and parts of what are currently Maple Avenue and Northumberland Road respectively. This purchase marked not only Worcester’s earliest white settlement but also its first connection with Boston proper through land purchases. This initial group also voted unanimously to form their own company called “The Company Of Artificers & Innkeepers For New England” with twelve members including five residents from Worcester – Josiah Bartlett (20 years old), Benjamin Page (21 years old), Elijah Hawthorne (24 years old), Nicholas Gorham (25 years old), Levi Woodbury (26 years old) and Nathanael Eaton(14). They laid out streets gridwise starting at Meeting House Square then turning south along Meetinghouse Lane until they reached Watertown Square where they turned east again following present day Harvard Avenue until they reachedpresent day Everett Street which led them finally back into Watertown square where they laid out their remaining streets southeastward towards today’s Arlington Cemetery In 1641 John Denton married Mary Dean who came over with her husband William Foxe about forty miles west from Worcester via Ipswich Connecticut . In early 1642 Mary Dean left her husband William Foxe for John Denton and started living with him near present day Springfield . With added support from some influential people like Cotton Mather Boston quickly realized there must be more than just its isolated village type existence if this community were going to flourish . So General Court ordered Danvershire Farm be burned down because they believed it To Be An Abuse Of Power By The Manor Commissioners And ordered That All Roads therein leading To or From It Be Closed off Which Order Was Soon Followed UpBy A Law Providing That No Person should Live Within Three Miles Of Any Place Where Church Or Market Is planted .
