The name of the town may be derived from "woburn", an Old English word meaning "a small hill." The first people to live here were the Wampanoag Indians who occupied what is now Woburn during the early 17th century. European settlement began with Captain John Smith's landing on December 14, 1626 on Cape Cod. He named his new land Wadhams after Lord William Herbert of Bute (later King George II). A year later he founded a trading post at present-day Waltham Abbey. In 1629 Plymouth Colony gave this place to the Pilgrims as part of their Agreement ofsettlement; but it was not until 1636 that it passed into English hands through charter from King Charles I. In 1804–5 Nathan Hale served as captain of HMS "Valiant" during the War of 1812 and took part in many naval engagements including that against Canada at Lake Erie which led to his capture by Canadian forces and extradition to England where he faced trial for treason charges before Parliament and was executed by firing squad on March 21, 1814. It became a town on July 1, 1875, when it merged with neighboring Auburn and South Hadley townships to form the new Middlesex County. The town has been called "Hubbardstown" since 1850 because of its prominent role in early American history as a center for religious education and missionary work in what is now Rhode Island (then known as New England). In 1835, Rev. George Hubbard founded the Mennonite Church here after moving from Pennsylvania to serve as pastor of Congregationalist churches there. After traveling throughout New England helping missionaries set up congregations, he returned to Woburn in 1840 and founded Hubbard Academy which continues to be one of the leading private schools in Massachusetts today. In 1865–67 two railroadroads were completed through the heart of town - one linking Boston with Fall River and another connecting Worcester with Lynnhaven on Longmeadow Bay - making it an attractive destination for businessmen and settlers looking for land nearMassachusetts' major cities. The community grew rapidly; by 1870 it had over 1,000 residents living both inside and outside its wallsgrenaded by industry and transportation opportunities that only multiplied during World War I when munitions production increased dramatically around Boston's factories; but growth stopped abruptly after hostilities ended; nonetheless Woburn continued to experience rapid growth until 1925 when all other towns within Middlesex County joined forces to form what is now Greater Boston
The town of Woburn, Massachusetts was founded in 1638 by Increase Mather. It became a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1777. The town lost its status as a separate community after the American Revolution and merged with other towns in the area.
