Woburn is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 44,847 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Hampshire County and the second-largest municipality in Massachusetts after Boston. Woburn is part of the Boston–Worcester–Bridgeport Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to see what is now Woburn were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their voyage from Spain to India in 1524. They named it Nouvelle Angoulême because they had sailed past an island called Angoulême on their way there. In 1638, Increase Mather moved from Ipswich to a farm near Woburn with his family and began to pastor the Protestant church there. In 1761, John Adams purchased a tract of land that included present-day Woburn from Increase Mather for $5 per acre (today's equivalent would be about $ ). Adams named it Prairie View because he saw fields of rice growing thereabouts. Adams played an important role in developing Woburn as an early center of trade and culture in eastern Massachusetts. He founded two hospitals: one for sick soldiers during World War I and another for Native Americans who had been captured by British forces during the war. He also built a number of homes here including Faneuil Hall which served as the seat of government until 1802 when Worcester took over that function; this building still stands today as part of Government House Park.) In 1868, Congress passed legislation creating Worcester County; this created new boundaries for Hampshire County which divided it into townships (the original townships are still used). One reason why Woburn became so large was its location sandwiched between Worcester and Kingston upon Hull – both cities were quickly becoming major centers of commerce and industry due to their location at the intersection of several major routes linking New England with Canada and Mexico.] It wasn't until after incorporation as a town did residents start electing their own officials - first selectmen then city councilors - beginning with Jabez Bowen in 1892.[1] The Town Meeting Act gave residents more power over their affairs although some aspects such as taxation remain within the control of municipal authorities today [see also: history lesson: What does "town" mean?]. Today's downtown area contains many businesses dating back to before incorporation including The Gardner Shop which opened in 1892,[2] The Masonic Temple which was built c1900,[3] Bradford School[4], American Legion Post #412[5], First Congregational Church[6], Stowe Baptist Church[7], Boyden Theatre[8]and many others! AJAX Stadium just across Route 8 from downtown has seen numerous professional sports matches (e.g., soccer, baseball, basketball) throughout its history including Super Bowls XVI & XVIII being held here multiple times! Today nearly all services provided by municipal governments take place within or near downtown w/ exception being Waterfront Services provided by South Shore Wastewater District located approximately 2 miles south & east on Route 6

In 1825, its boundaries were enlarged as part of a larger change in county government which included all of Worcester and parts of Leicester and Northampton Counties. In 1829, Woburn voted to annex from Norfolk County and become an independent town again under its own government with a Mayor and Aldermen who were elected by popular vote rather than appointed by theGovernor. On May 15th, 1932, Woburn voters passed a By-law making itelective for all citizens over 21 years old to serve on select committees necessary for carrying out local ordinances including public works projects such as roads and sewers; fire protection; libraries; school guidance counselors
