The first revolvers were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a gunsmith and rifle maker, and were used to protect people and property from Native Americans. Ammunition production began around 1810 when John Brown of Providence, Rhode Island started manufacturing shot for use with pistols. Ammunition companies soon sprung up throughout New England, and by 1846 ammunition sales totaled $2 million annually. By 1902 ammunition sales totaled over $25 million per year. The rise of World War II led to a big increase in ammunition sales as the war effort resulted in an increase in military demand for munitions. Since World War I, Woburn has been home to two major ammo factories: Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRAC) and Emyrle Arsenal Corporation (EAC). In 1951 WRAC merged with Remington Rand Company to form Winchester Incorporated. In 1970 EAC was purchased by Citizens National Rifle Association (CRA) which continues to produce ammunition here today. Today Woburn is one of the busiest Ammo Centers in America due to its location on the Springfield Armory complex – home to more than 100 firing ranges including indoor clay Target Shooting, black powder shootings and muzzleloading demonstrations!
