Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Westfield is known for its shopping malls and its election history. The first people to live in what is now Westfield were the Pequot Indians who came there in 1636 from Connecticut. They built a small village on an island in the river that later became Easton when they were forced out of their land by English settlers. In 1796, the town of Sheffield was created from parts of Westfield and Easton. In 1812, Sheffield merged with other towns to form what is today Berkshire County. At that time it had a population of 686 people and consisted of nine villages: Addison, Arlington Heights, Bedford Falls, Bohemia, Deer Park, Foxboro', Groveland Heights/Easton Village/Westford Township (now Watertown),Howland Hills/Winthrop Hills/Hiltonville (now Lawrence), Milton (now Union) and Newburyport (now Newton). On July 15th 1814 while serving as justice of peace for Berkshire County he issued an order which forbid white men from living within one-half mile (1 kilometer) of any schoolhouse or church; this order has been called "the birch law." This act caused great outrage among the colonists who felt that these restrictions were unfairly targeting them because they were black or poor. In 1825 John Robert Gates purchased 3 acres (1 hectare) east of present day Main Street for $5 per acre ($30 per km²). He named his tract "Gates Farm". Gates began developing it into what is today's main shopping center commercial district known as "Westfield". After struggling unsuccessfully during many years to get state government recognition he finally received it on November 2nd 1830 when then Governor William Russell signed legislation creating the Berkshire Broadcasting Company with assets including "the world's largest collection both old and new books" under the name "The Western Branch." In 1896 Congress passed an act giving women voting rights in Massachusetts; this was followed by similar laws throughout much of America by women until successful petitions against these laws led to World War II when all such rights were restored nationwide under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program
Westfield is a city in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 97,746 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Worcester County and the second-most populous city in Massachusetts after Boston. Westfield was founded on November 3, 1795 by Nicholas Westfall and others as part of a land grant to John Adams from Parliament. The town has since grown to include much of southeastern Worcester County and parts of Middlesex and Hampshire counties. The first permanent settler in what is now Westfield was Nicholas Westfall, who arrived with his family on November 3, 1795 from England. He platted the town site on an area that had been part of Welbourn Township (now Brockton), which he had purchased from the local Indian tribe. On December 6, 1796, James Fenton purchased two tracts of land east of present day Park Street for $1 per acre; these tracts became known as George's Grove and Chelsea Heights. On January 1st 1801, when Worcester County was created from Parts of Middlesex and Hampshire Counties under the new state Constitution, then-Mayor Nicholas Westfall proposed that the new county seat be located at Westfield; this proposal was accepted by voters on February 14th. In 1818–19 Ebenezer Goodspeed donated land along present day State Road 9 between US 301/Route 128 (present day Jericho Turnpike) and MA Route 94 (present day Arlington Avenue) to make Wayland Square; this square served aswestfield's first public park until it was dismantled in 1930s due to WWI munitions storage concerns. In 1822–24 John White built a mill on Damen Creek near modern-day Holyoke Street; this mill remains one of westFIELD's most iconic symbols today. In 1830–31 Isaac Weare erected a large frame house at 2 W Main Street for himself and his wife Mary Ann Weare; this house is still standing today within walking distance of westFIELD’s downtown core. In 1833 Salem Baptist Church was organized with Reverend Sheldon Dudley officiating at its founding; Rev Dudley would later become pastor emeritus at nearby First Baptist Church which would be moved to its current location across Broadway just south of Randolph next door in 1865 after being destroyed by fire during an overflow crowding incident at Invalidus Hall where Congregational services were held monthly throughout much of Springfield's early history.................................................................................. .......
