Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Westfield were Congregationalists from Connecticut. They arrived in 1636 and built a log cabin on the west side of present-day Merrymeeting Brook. In 1797, the legislature granted land to the Friends Meeting House Committee for purchase of by private individuals for use as a town site. The first store was built on High Street in 1802 and soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1868, George Washington Carver opened his Agricultural and Meat Market on Main Street near where Westfield now stands. It remains one of America's earliest commercial food markets today. Carver's market attracted customers from all over New England and beyond; many famous people had their meals here including General John Forbes (1795–1865), played football at Harvard University under Amos Kendall (1784–1847) and James Kensey (1811–1886). After Carver's death in 1870, his market continued to be an important part of town life until it closed its doors for good in 1906 following several years of neglect by the Town Committee due to financial difficulties caused by agricultural stagflation during World War I. Westfield was founded in 1691 by Increase Mather. The town became a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1713 and then the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1775. It merged with other towns to form the new city of Boston on April 15, 1871.
