In 1838–39 Ezra Stiles organized an effort to build a wagon road from Chicopee Falls through western New England so that goods could be transported eastward without having to go through Boston or Hartford (the then capital city). This road became known as the "Ezra Stiles Trail". In 1851–52 Drury Lane School opened in downtown Westfield after being built on land donated by Colonel Ebenezer Channing and others who had seen an opportunity for education in rural areas adjacent to Springfield. A two-story school building with a basement served as classrooms until 1958 when it was replaced by a three-story structure that still stands today as one of downtownWestfield's most visible landmarks.
