The fire destroyed more than 60% of the town's buildings and killed around 30 people; it remains one of the worst losses suffered by America during that war. Following World War II, parts of Westfield were developed into high-density residential areas such as Arlington Heights and North York which remain some of Greater Boston's most visible neighborhoods today. However much of rural westchester which lay within Middlesex County until 1978 still retains significant agricultural acreage with housing developments established only since then (e.g., Dummertown Farms). The current incarnation of Westfield began developing gradually starting in earnest in earnest post-World War II; specifically following incorporation on July 1st 1959 as a result of efforts led by Mayor John Fenton with support from then Governor Elbridge Gerry and Congressman Julius Javits Jr.; among others local businesses persons Herb Kappeler (founder/director Rotary Club), Maurice Salerno (president Italian American Chamber Of Commerce) Edwin Slingerstrom (founder/director Sears Dept.) George Larrabee (owner Realtors Association). On November 15th 1966 voters ratified a $2 million bond issue for mill modernization/expansion; with this investment new 441 acres would be opened up for development with an initial targetpopulation increase to 30000 residents over 10 years; however this number never materialized due largely to lacklustre resources available at that time parkade development had become popularly preferred instead even before opening day 7500 individuals 5200 homes

Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,718 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Westfield was incorporated as a town in 1792 and became a city in 1851. The townsite that would become Westfield was first settled by people from Ipswich who arrived there in 1635 and named it "Wassamore". The first post office west of Boston was established at Wassamore in 1638, and the first settler to purchase land there was John Winship in December 1702. Wassamore quickly grew into a small village with only 20 residents when the British burned it to punish the Native Americans for breaking an agreement not to disturb them during wartime. In 1792, after years of discussion between representatives from Ipswich, Walthamstow, Quincy, Northampton and other towns around Boston about forming a new town on account of its strategic location bordering on three large rivers—the Mystic River to the north, the Charles River to the east and Wellesley River to the south—Westfield finally voted itself into being on February 15th with 524 votes against 116 cast by those living elsewhere withinBoston's limits. The Town Meeting House still stands today (built c 1830) as one of America's earliest wooden buildings designed specifically for public use--replacing an earlier log structure that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. That year also saw another milestone when water pipes were laid down from Watertown through what is now downtown WestFIELD and upriver along Centre Street to where stately mills were located nearpresent-day Fenway Park; these pipe lines formed what would come to be known as "The Grid." In 1818-19 longshoremen working for John Stevens built their wharf just south of present day State Street on what is now called Stevens Point Pond which served both river traffic coming intoBoston Harbor while also serving as storage for goods arriving downstream from larger ports such as Salem or Worcester; this wharf would eventually become one of America’s most wellknown pleasure lakes used by locals and visitors alike for boating, fishing, swimming and skating until its closure following World War II due largely to changing political conditions surroundingAmerican shipping lanes; meanwhile much older commercial docks situated along Beacon Hill overlooking downtownWestFIELD continued serving local industrial/commercial users until they too were closed offaccess over time due mostlyto advancesin shipbuilding technology which has made Panama Canal obsolete primarily because boats can now reach virtually any port worldwide insteadof havingTo sail via tight channels widthwise inside American waters like atSalem orWorcester .
