Westfield, Massachusetts is a small town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Westfield is located on the west side of the town center and it includes two shopping malls- One in downtown Westfield and one on Route 128 near West Point in suburban Winchester. The first settlement in what is now Westfield came about in 1636 when Captain John Winthrop explored the area. The first houses were built around 1712 by Colonel Samuel Adams and his family who had purchased land from Governor William Bradford as part of a trade agreement between England and America. The original name for the community was "Winchester". In 1768, Colonel Thomas Moulton bought land to the east of present day Main Street and laid out a new village called "Westfield" which included parts of present-day Winchester. In 1802, President James Ketchum sold 1/2 interest in Main Street to Colonel Nathaniel Palmer which led to the name change to "Westfield Township". In 1814, United States troops burned down much of what are now downtown Westfield while besieging Fort Taunton during war with Britain. This event helped spur development within what are today limits of WestFIELD Village (now Downtown). After World War I, many businesses moved away from downtown because there was no wartime housing available; however much later other businesses brought back their relocated customers into downtown during peacetime by creating retail areas such as: The Gilded Age Ballroom (now Macy's), First Baptist Church (now Stroud Elementary School), Queen's Chapel (later All Souls Unitarian Church), KFC restaurant (now Dunkin' Donuts) and several other large businesses that anchor present day streetscapes including State Street NE - home to many banks - Businesses have grown increasinglyTech orientated with companies like Amazon having leased space or established stores at various intersections throughout Downtown On July 13th 1990 due to an act passed by then Governor Michael Dukakis called “The Taxpayers Bill’’ this became known as “The Day That History Began” as over $1 Billion was invested locally within 5 years leading up toover $5BToday Downtown still features some older buildings but most notably includes: main library building completed in 1946 named after Senator Robert Flanders who championed its construction along with post office annexe built 1958 following plans drawn up by architect Philip Johnson Jr.; Quincy Market – once home of Sears & Roebuck - currently hosts several restaurants including Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Parlors; brick Savings Bank Building erected 1893 soon after formation of bank district; Bulfinch Park also contains severalParking lots for users cars or motorcycles etc.; numerous residential developments have been erected since1990s such as Toll House Place totaling 8 multifamily dwellings developed across 3 acres now containing recreational spaces such as tennis courts etc., additional nonresidential uses include 2 high school campuses - one being used for Boys High School football games while Girls High School plays lacrosse; 50 acres annexed from neighboring towns for services required by growth such as water treatment plant etc.; extensive infrastructure has been put into place for servicing all aspects associated with growing pains such as: roads, landscaping etc

In 1945, Westfield merged with neighboring towns of PlainFIELD and Holyoke to form what is now known as "the 3 Towns." The town's rich history can be traced back to its founding days when English colonists arrived in 1795 and started construction on a small community called Westfield. The town quickly became successful due to its railroads and agricultural capabilities which made it one of the fastest-growing towns in New England during the 19th century. By 1865, Westfield had reached its peak population thanks to both its growing economy and increasing industry; this growth led to the incorporation of the city of Westfield into Massachusetts on April 1st that year. Due to its rapid growth, Easton followed suit soon after becoming an incorporationse of his own within two years of annexation. This unprecedented level of incorporation would later set a precedent for other towns throughout New England which would follow suit over time. In 1945, when PlainFIELD and Holyoke amalgamated with Westfields neighboring town of Holyoke (population 712), it was said that this made for "the most comprehensive merger in local government history." While many aspects of daily life were changed following this merger (such as zoning laws being rewritten), overall it has been seen as an important step forward for the city because it gave birth to modern day culture which persists today outside of downtownWestfield. Today, while many aspects have changed since 1945 (most notably increased traffic), overallWestfields cultural landscape remains strikingly similar even though it spans centuries! Today's downtown areas include numerous cafes/bars/restaurants along with art galleries/museums which continue to thrive despite occasional closures or reductions in service due to budget limitations or changing trends within society at large however there are also new development projects underway such as a $100 million redevelopment project adjacent to Interstate 495 known as 'New Town' which will see significant job creation across multiple industries including technology and health care
