Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was named for George Westfield (1764-1847), an American banker and politician who served as Mayor of Boston from 1829 to 1837 and as a U.S. Senator from 1841 to 1845. Founded in 1692 by colonists who were seeking land west of Boston, Westfield grew rapidly due to its location on the edge of Worcester County and its position as the terminus of Route 4 which linkedBoston with New England via Springfield and Worcester. In 1795, John Adams founded what would become Harvard University in Westfield; Harvard's first president, Ezra Stiles (1684-1759), donated land for the school and built a campus that still stands today near Main Street and College Avenue. In 1798, John Quincy Adams became President of the United States after being elected to office as a Ulysses S. Grant's Vice Presidential candidate; he expelled British settlers from Charlestown because they had not signed a treaty providing for their removal. In 1800the town voted to annex Worcestershire County but this vote was rescinded by then-Governor Jonathan Edwards because Richardsborough had not paid property taxes since 1796 even though it lay within Worcester County boundaries In 1802–3 voters passed resolutions asking Congress to annex Worcestershire County but no action was taken until 1850 when then-President James K Polk ordered General Peter Thayer to survey all public lands within two years as part of his Indian Removal Policy; according to one source[1] Thayer discovered that almost every family in Westfield owned some land within Indian Territory which they had acquired through various means including grants or purchases This led Congress eventually to pass the Kansas–Nebraska Act on March 3, 1861 granting Nebraska Territory status unto Dakota Territory following Lincoln's veto of that act on April 6th After Kansas achieved statehood on January 14th 1861 Wyoming Territory was created adjacent thereto with its own territorial government complete with courts martial and military strength effective February 1st 1863 when Fort Laramie fell under federal jurisdiction . On December 12th 1865 during Reconstruction efforts in South Carolina General Order No 1 established provisional military headquarters at Greenville which would later become known as Camp Union during the All Souls Rebellion . After Reconstruction ended most white settlers left for other parts of America while African Americans continued into those areas until direct discrimination against them began authorized by Section 5(a)of Civil Rights Act OF 1964 . Most African Americans fled before busloads arrived en route from Montgomery Ala., Detroit Mich., Raleigh Nc., Memphis Tenn., Tulsa Okla., Wellston Jct., Topeka Kan ,Mobile Ala .) arriving at points such as Fayetteville Ark,, Topeka Kan , Mobile Ala .) At any rate most blacks were effectively displaced by whites beginning in earnest after World War II when ranches were developed across much rural southern Africa
