Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 41,744 at the 2010 census. Westfield is part of the Springfield–Braintree metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area were among those who left Cambridge for New England in 1630 and began to build what would become Westfield on an alignment of land that had been donated to them by Sir John Winthrop. The name "Westfield" was first used for a small community within the town limits in 1795. In 1955, when Interstate 95 was built through the town center, much of the original downtown business district around Main Street was destroyed by fire including many of the large mills which had long been functioning without interruption thanks to their water rights from Lake Winnipesaukee. However, more than two hundred businesses were rebuilt and continue serving customers today as part of what is now called "the civic core". In 1963, there were also major renovations to Science Hill Elementary School which included new construction (including a gymnasium), remodeling of classrooms and addition of a science wing with laboratory space for students from throughout central MA In 1984-1985 there was significant renovation/ reconstruction done at all four high schools in town: Milton-Farmington HS (now known as Webster HS), Nashua Valley HS (now known as Hampshire HS), Westfield Jr./Sr Highschools (now known as Easton Jr./Sr Highschools) & Central Middle School (formerly Hammond Middle School).
