In 1837, about two-thirds of the original land in Westfield were sold for $2 million to developer Isaac Newton Wright because he saw it as an opportunity to build one of America's largest shopping malls. In 1955, when Interstate 95 was built through central Berkshire County and much of what is now Westfield became rural again, most of the commercial property within its boundaries were lost in development or demolition over the years. However, some old buildings remain on Main Street such as Storrs Hall - once home to Representative Nathan Fenton (D-Springfield) - and First Congregational Church which has been moved several times since its construction in 1798 but still retains many features from that time including baptismal fonts dating back to 1692 One reason why Westfield has remained relatively unchanged since its days as a small farming community is because it lacks any major thoroughfares that connect it to other nearby towns or cities. Westfield, Massachusetts was a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 18,895 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Westfield property on which it was founded by Revolutionary War veteran and signer of the Declaration of Independence Benjamin West in 1768. The town took its present form when it was incorporated as a village in 1853. The original settler families were Ahlgren, Björklund, Browning, Chase, Dolan, Fenton, Gilmore, and Ladd. They all arrived during the early 1800s to seek new opportunities on land that would be available for farming after the American Revolution. The first church was built in 1792 and settlers started trading with other communities in nearby towns. By 1800 there were over 100 people living in Westfield. In 1802 an act providing for incorporation of villages passed both houses of Congress and became law; however no one joined until 1853 because of objections from neighboring towns that wanted to remain unincorporated. The first elections for Village President were held on November 3rd, 1853; all but two members elected to serve four-year terms without pay. On January 1st following ratification of the Constitution of America by state legislatures they became effective and continued until their term expired on December 31st each year; this gave residents a say in government which they soon adopted as a principle throughout their village formulating polices including school board governance (until 1898). Village Presidents served as checkers against wealthy neighbors who had more clout within their respective townships or counties - something that still exists today among some residents and is seen asMODERN DAY VALUE SYSTEMS BY WHICH A COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT TEAM IS SELECTED TO RESPECT THE PUBLIC GOOD OF ALL MEMBERSHIP IN THEIR VILLAGE ASSEMBLEMENT." In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant made his headquarters at Saratoga Springs while operations continued into18EZIOGRAPHYAND HISTORYOF WESTFIELDMASSACHUSETTS"the spring season he used Long Spring Farm located about six miles southwest of where he later established his Headquarters at White Sands Proving Ground." Afterward operations moved back east to Fort Erie before finally ending at White Sands Proving Grounds near New York City in 1881 where they remained until 1945 when they transferred to Lackland AFB Texas USA.) For many years these military activities conducted adjacent to Ft Erie led to high levels of noise pollution due to artillery fire across Lake Ontario which could be heard upstate
