Gun Targets in Westfield, Massachusetts began as a small collection of hunting rifles and shotguns stored on the property of George D. Weisfeld, Sr., in 1922. The first target shoot was held at the old barn on Deer Path Road, west of town. A new shooting range was built on the site in 1928 and named after Mr. Weisfeld, Jr., its founder. Gun targets were initially made from lead ortinized with a coat of paint to give them an appearance similar to firearms. They gradually became less realistic and more like real life human targets which could be hit by either bow or arrow. In 1954, the first Annual Meeting for the NRA was held at the Memorial Auditorium in Westfield, and NRA President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the keynote address. At that meeting, NRA member Benjamin Harrison presented a model gun that had been designed by Harry Houdini to demonstrate how easy it is to fire an automatic weapon without any training required! In 1984, NRA member Edward Melling introduced a new type of target called “V-shaped” targets which are designed to simulate dangerous pistol shots when used with bows and arrows! The sport has continued to grow over the years with many participants statewide and around the world!

The city of Westfield, Massachusetts is located in Essex County, and is bordered by the towns of Billerica to the east, Springfield to the south, Northampton to the west and Quincy to the north. The population of Westfield was just over 50,000 as of 2010. Westfield was first settled in 1636 by Peter Pond and his wife Margery Peake. By 1795, a school had been built within present-day Westfield and it served as a center for education for rural residents. In 1812, James Greenough founded a gristmill in what is now downtown Westfield. At that time, there were only three stores in town - one operated by John Fenton and two by Nicholas Weems - but they soon became dominant forces in town affairs. In 1820, Captain George Higginson provided land for a new courthouse on High Street in downtown Westfield. The courthouse was built using donations from many locals including Major General John Starkweather and Samuel Adams. The cornerstone was laid on October 20th of that year by Governor Cotton Mather who also donated $1,000 towards its construction. In 1827-28, westward expansion commenced when Jonas Sargent bought 1/2 mile (3 km) of common ground between Main Street and State Road 3 near where he currently stands today known as Sargent's Corneroups Park! This move increased traffic on Route 3 which didn't exist at this point! In 1840-41, Drury & Keyes erected an adobePhase I brick Public Schoolhouse within present day Wellesley Avenue across from Griggs' Tavern which still stands today! It housed grades 1-8 at that time! In 1849-50 there was an addition to the Public Schoolhouse which housed grades 9-12 & an Infant Department! It also housed a furnace for heating up buildings inside during wintertime! Additionally notable about this building is that it still contains original windowsills & doors!! Today it serves as part of Wellesley History Museum!!!
