Westfield is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is the largest city in that area by total population. The town of Westfield was first settled in 1653 by colonists from England who named it after the ancient English settlements in Hampshire and Dorset. The town had a freehold status until 1723 when it became a part of what was then called Middlesex County. In 1814, Westfield became one of nine towns to be included in the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. After statehood, Westfield continued to serve as an important community and educational center within Middlesex County until its annexation byBoston in 1898. In 1907, Samuel Eliot Morison purchased land east of downtown Boston for development into a large urban park which would become known as "Morison Park". A year later, he donated money for construction of a tennis courts, an arena for basketball and baseball games and other public amenities. The park was officially dedicated on April 12, 1909 by Mayor John Hynes with music performed by Orpheus Hall Company Singers under license from Edison Electric Light Company (now GE). Today, Westfall remains one ofBoston's most vibrant neighborhoods with many cultural attractions including several museums including Fenway Park which has been home to various teams since 1903; Quincy Market; Beacon Hill Park; Congregationalist Meeting House (1796); Newburyport Harbour Inn (1812-1816); Christ Church Cathedral School (1868-1924) and Saint Anselm's Episcopal School (1902). Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to settle in what is now Westfield was Capt. John Smith and his followers in 1630. The town's first permanent settler was Nicholas Willard who had arrived from Rhode Island in 1639. In 1768, Samuel Gridley founded the Gridley Observatory which remains a functioning observatory to this day. On April 12th, 1794, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's army camped on land that now makes up much of downtown Westfield after crossing the river into Massachusetts from New York City - an event which helped spur economic development in the community. In 1810-1811 Amos Eaton built a brick house known as "Eaton House" on North Main Street for himself and his wife Abigail Eaton (the daughter of Colonel Ebenezer Eaton). Reverend James Greenleaf served as pastor of First Congregational Church located on East Main Street from 1811 until his death in 1827; he left behind a library and other philanthropic works within the town center that remain today including many art galleries and museums throughout central and eastern Massachusetts. Prior to 1800s only white men could own land anywhere in what is now Hampden County; however beginning around 1800 black people began to purchase parcels of land here as well with some eventually becoming homeowners through lotteries or inheritance/estate clearing mechanisms like chainmail fencing (known then as "segregated neighborhoods"). In 1898-99 when Boston businessman Cyrus McCormick started developing Quincy Market – one of America’s largest open air markets – he happened upon plans for an agricultural college near WestFIELD where he purchased 2 acres for $50000 which would later become Brown University;[2] although initially designed as an agricultural research center with classroom buildings and faculty housing (later changed to dormitories), McCormick soon realized it would be more useful as a commercial center for Quincy Market with its large market area sandwiched between two major thoroughfares: High Street and Northampton Road (today’s Meeting Place Drive). This led him to rename Brown University “West Field”[3] while still intending it to function primarily as an agricultural research center – something it has continued to do up until today despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966].
