Westfield is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first white settlers in what is now Westfield were Nicholas Coston and his family who came from Ipswich, Suffolk, England in 1630. They built the first home on what is now Richards Road in 1635 and named it "Wesley". In 1775, John Adams moved to Westfield with his wife and two daughters from Stratholme, Scotland; he had been elected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress from Worcester County.Adams played an important role in forming the United States Constitution and was one of its co-authors. He also served as President of Harvard University from 1797 to 1800. In 1853, Isaac Babcock opened the first store west of Boston on State Street in what is now known as Babcock's Landing. The town name originated with him when he changed it from "Hingham" (a small settlement near present day Lowell) to "Westfield" after himself because he thought it would be more likely to become a thriving community than stay "humble." In 1869, John Fenton bought 400 acres (160 hectares) around modern-day downtown Westfield for $5 per acre (2 km²). He laid out a plan that included creating a downtown square flanked by four blocks of houses with open spaces between them; this plan became known as Fenton's Park. A year later, he donated another 100 acres (40 hectares) for development east of downtown and naming it Northampton Square after Northampton Abbey where he had been educated while living in England. In 1907–08 construction began on the Sears Tower which became one of America's tallest buildings until it was replaced by the Empire state Building at 553 feet (183 meters). The original structure cost $244 million ($ when measured against current prices), but only took 15 years to build – faster than any other project ever completed under US government guidelines then or since! Of course much has changed since then including changing demographics within towns like WestFIELD itself…
