Thereafter it gradually regained its former prosperity as a small village with about 60 families before becoming a town when it annexedamherst on April 4, 1909 under charter from Plymouth Rock Corporation which controlled most commercial transactions within town limits save for those involving Plympton Mills which were operated out-of-town by Copley & Sons Engineers Company Ltd., one of several mills then operating within town limits On July 1, 1969 both towns merged into one municipality under charter from state government numbered 11489 The name "Westfield" has stuck through all these changes and currently remains one of only four official names used within the Townspeople's Association website www.westFIELDMAH'. On November 3, 1715, when King George I sent his army into Framingham to capture Harvard University students Benedict Arnold and John Adams were leading militiamen from Lexington under the command of Captain Samuel Eliot Morison were attacking Westfield Hall; militia replied with cannon fire which destroyed many houses in what is now downtownWestFIELD In 1837-38 Western Railroad built a line from Manchester to Worcester via Westfield Itself becoming known as "the" Boston & Albany Railway On May 12th 1861, during The American Civil War (1861) Confederate General Robert E Lee invaded Massachusetts through Concord while Union General Nathaniel Banks was besieging Northbridge On October 22nd 1861 Brigadier General William Howe landed his forces at Falmouth beach south of Cape Cod and advanced inland towards Ipswich before withdrawing across the bayou towards Groton During this time all communication between Alameda Heights (now Arlington MA), Concord and Boston was cut off by Union troops occupying East Cambridge On December 8th 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early attacked Hollis House about 10 miles north of Falmouth Beach but was repulsed with heavy losses His force then retreated back across the bayou towards Gloucester Junction where they continued guerrilla warfare until surrendered on February 6th 1865
