Many citizens donated their weapons and equipment to either the government or friendly forces throughout the war. The use of firearms in Westfield, Massachusetts began with the incorporation of the town on December 3, 1692. The first settler in what is now Westfield was Amos de Quincy. De Quincy and his three sons founded the town on a parcel of land that had been donated by John Winthrop to the townspeople. On July 24, 1768, Benjamin Church incorporated as a village in response to an appeal from Westfield Historian Edwin M. Stanton. Westfield was one of five townships that formed Springfield Township when it was separated from Worcester County on February 14, 1812. Springfield Township became part of Middlesex County on March 3, 1838. On May 20, 1854, the state legislature passed an act making it a crime for any person “to carry or possess any firearm without having first obtained a license from the court having cognizance thereof”. This law was repealed on January 1, 1865 by Act No. 7 of 1865 which provided for universal registration requirements for all handguns beginning on April 15th that year. It re-appeared as Section 5-a of chapter 142nd Statutes (25 UMass Reg 9355) effective February 27th following enactment into law by Governor Andrew Johnson who signed it into law at his State Fair address

The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritans from England. In 1765, it became part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1803, it became part of the new United States of America and was incorporated as Westfield Township on April 26, 1813. On February 14, 1847, Westfield became a city under its own charter and adopted its present name. Westfield is located in southeastern Middlesex County at (42.640327,-71.422695). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. In terms of size and shape - much like other small towns across New England - Westfield seems almost miniature when viewed from a distance; however even closer up things start to make sense: its narrow streets wind their way around each other like veins on an artery; its buildings are built solidly but not so tightly together that they look faceless or anonymous; and despite being only about half-way square there's plenty of open space within walking distance for all sorts of events - whether that's farmer's markets or community dances (which often happen outdoors). Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,216 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–617 Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1638 by English Puritans. In 1847 it became the seat of government for Hampshire County and Westfield became a separate municipality on July 1, 1847. The towns merged again on February 1, 1907. The original settlement site of Westfield consisted of a small group of farms scattered around what is now the center of town. On December 9, 1638, Nathaniel Eaton and his family arrived from London with five other colonists to found Westfield on land that had been donated by Sir John Winthrop to the New England Company. Their first crop was raised without irrigation and they were very successful until an Indian raid destroyed their farm in 1641-42. However, Eaton and his men persevered and founded another farm there two years later; this time they built a dam across river Mattapan which allowed them to cultivate crops using series water wheels instead of using direct sunlight or wind power for irrigation purposes as had been done before. In 1724-25 Benjamin Goodrich erected one of the earliest brick buildings in Westfield when he constructed a log cabin called "The Gables" near present day Main Street corner First Avenue and King Street (later known as Goodrich Hall). In 1796-97 William Prescott built a three story stone structure called "The Beacon". This building served as both local courthouse and jail from 1796 until 1807 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions while under construction by Captain George Lawrence who also operated an inn adjacent to it at that time called "The Star Inn". From 1800 through 1802 James Ayer built several frame houses including "Mr.'s House" (now Adams House) on Meetinghouse Hill which housed some 30 members of Congregational clergy from southern Hampshire County during their winter visits to Westfield between December 8th through January 3rd each year; many meetings were held here about important theological issues faced by that period such as elections for vestrymen (the governing body for churches within counties), church property seizures/acquisitions etc., judicial proceedings etc.. On October 10th 1847 Samuel Gridley organized what would become known as the Professional School District No 2 which included all towns in central Hampshire County west ofoston except Northampton where schools were operated separately by individual proprietors until amalgamation into district No 2 on July 1st1887 - henceforth 'WestFIELD' school system! gridley's academy soon attracted top talent from all over New England due its excellent facilities including large classrooms huge auditorium capable seating up to 350 people…..this sparks off downtown business growth with more people coming downtown looking for opportunities……….westFIELD started becoming self-sufficient thru continued economic development………………………………………..
