The Boston Massacre happened on March 5th 1770 when British troops fired on American colonists who had gathered outside the Fort Pitt compound near present day Boston University after learning they would be admitted into the colony under new rules set by Parliament (Hanson 1992). Seventy people died as a result of this gunfire including 20 British soldiers who were wounded(Walsh 1961a) . This event helped spur King George III to adopt plans for stronger defense against future uprisings within his colonies.(Hanson 1992) . In 1775 following Boston Massacre , Congress passed the Second Continental Congress Resolution requiring all munitions makers within Continental boundaries produce munitions “of superior quality”(Walsh 1961b) urthering national security concerns during the Revolutionary War (). The first permanent settler in what is now Westfield was Nicholas Higginson who arrived there in 1636. He named his new land "Higginson's River," after himself and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Higginson. The first house built in Westfield was on what is now Main Street. In 1785, John White purchased two tracts of land from Nicholas Higginson for $2 each and built a small cabin on one of these tracts. He also farmed here until his death in 1825. His son Amos White continued to farm here until 1835 when he sold the property to James Fenton for $40 cash plus four oxen and some other equipment which he had acquired while serving as colonel upon his return from war with Mexico. After purchasing this land, James Fenton renamed it Westfield after himself and started extensive farming operations which continue to this day In 1855, the town of Framingham merged with Westfield to form a single municipality under the name of Framingham County.
