In the early 1800s, a group of men in West Springfield, Massachusetts decided to create a self-defense system for themselves. They began by designing and building their own shotgun using only Honest John bolts and arrows. The weapon was named the "Shooter" and became very popular among local residents. At first, shooters used this weaponry for target practice only; however, over time they realized that the Shooter could also be used as an effective means of protection from predators or attackers. As shooting skills grew more refined, so too did the Shooter's arsenal. eventually becoming known as "the rifleman's bread and butter." In 1892, one of these Riflemen - James Weaver - patented his own version of safety glasses designed specifically for use with a shotgun. Weaver's glasses were Initially called "Weaver's Wayfarer" but soon changed to "Shooter Eye Protection". This naming convention stuck until 1934 when it was supplanted by the modern terminology: "sunglasses." The Town Council repealed this ordinance in 1924 after public outcry and opposition from gun owners. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became incorporated on April 24, 1872 with James Fenton as its first mayor In 1886 the railroad came through West Springfield allowing more commerce to grow within the small community A new courthouse was built between 1907-1911 which served as the court house until it burned down in 1916 When World War I began America declared war on Germany and within hours of America's declaration 3% of all cities were mobilized with 100% mobilization rates for towns less than 2,500 residents On March 8th 1917 local officials approved a resolution authorizing military draft without prior consent from citizens vote which sparked protest throughout the area including violence against noncombatants by mobs armed only with fists
