West Springfield, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,772 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was settled in 1795 by men from Suffolk County, England who came over on the Mayflower and named it after their hometown of Westleton in Essex County, England. The first white settlers were John Nicholson and his family who arrived in 1796; they built a small cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1807 or 1808 Captain Richard Clarke moved with his family to what is now West Springfield from Medford because he felt that there would be more opportunity for him there than where he had been living in Worcester Township. They brought with them many of their Indian friends and trading partners as well as some landowning English families. In 1814 Colonel George Brown established himself hereabouts as an entrepreneur and farmer-generalist; he soon became one of the most successful pioneers of this region. He organized two teams of labourers to help build roads and bridges throughout much of New England during those early days beforeMassachusetts entered into its own Confederation with Canada in 1867 (the same year that Worcester County joined). Colonel Brown's son-in-law Drury Davenport followed him into farming operations hereabouts about 1830; but it was Mr. Davenport'sson Jonathan Edwards (1793–1869) who really began to develop these lands into what we know today as West Springfield." Jonathan Edwards' father also had come to America when he was just sixteen years old on an indentured servant voyage from China via Japan; upon landing at Plymouth Colony near present day Quincy, MA he married Mary Astor (née Finch) while she was visiting her sister Martha at Plymouth Village northeast of modern day West Springfield - thus establishing one possible connection between East India Company profits and American soil! Mr Edwards took up permanent residence hereabouts circa 1830 following his arrival and started building what eventually became known as "The Farm" which stood until around 1910 when it burned down due to a combination of weather conditions including severe lightning storms plus arson! A non-profit organization called "Jonathan Edwards Homeowners Association" has since restored The Farm back to its original condition (& continues currently hosting programming & events there annually!) On July 3rd 1861 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 12656 calling for all slaveholders transporting slaves across states lines free persons or property owner thereof having paid appropriate expenses thereby coming into compliance.... This order caused great outrage among many Northerners who saw this demand as legitimizing slavery! As a result Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain founded 'Free Soil Party' HEREIN & agitating FOR FREE SPEECH IN WEST SPRINGFIELD GOVERNMENTAL PROCEEDINGS against thoseugly NEW MEMBERS OF THE CONSTITUTIONHOUSE!! Soon afterward numerous other abolitionists made similar efforts throughout MUCH OF AMERICA!"
