When that municipality disbanded in 1803, its land became part of the new town of West Springfield. In 1828, the towns of Wareham and Somerville annexed to West Springfield. In 1869, Boston seceded from New England and formed its own government with a capital city—Boston. As per Massachusetts law then in effect, Amherst and West Springfield were both incorporated as separate towns within Boston; however, they continued to maintain their own police forces until 1919 when they merged into one single police department under the name "Westfield Police Department". In 1957 the department changed its name back to "Westfield Police Department" after merging with Easton Township's police department which had been called "Easton Township Police Department". In 2002-2003 a $1 million project initiated by Mayor Joseph Curtatone aimed at improving public safety conditions across all aspects of life including pedestrian crossings located on Route 128 headed towards Worcester would be completed creating an improved crossing experience for drivers travelling through town center as well as motorists turning onto Routes 128 from other municipalities or villages east of Boston (Amherst/Worcester/Fenway/Beverly). This project also includes resurfacing large sections of Route 128 throughout all six municipalities involved making it easier for drivers to navigate while also providing access for pedestrians who need extra time when crossing busy streets during peak hours

Many notable people have lived or worked in West Springfield over time including: Driscoll Coolidge (President), Abraham Lincoln (1st Ulysses S. Grant), Franklin D Roosevelt (1929-1945), John F Kennedy (1932-1963), Muhammad Ali (1965-1981), Paul Revere (1770-1821). In recent years there has been increasing interest in aspects of local history such as restoration efforts at various buildings within town limits along with tours of some older neighborhoods located near downtown which offer insights into life back in those days.
