The village was founded by Puritans in 1692 as a small settlement on the west bank of the Mystic River. It grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1853 it had a population of 1,100 residents. By 1870, however, West Springfield's growth had slowed and its population only reached 700 people. However, during the 20th century West Springfield experienced significant growth and development. In addition to becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greater Boston, West Springfield also became known for its rich history and culture. The village was first settled by Puritans who arrived in 1692 looking for a safe place to live after fleeing religious persecution in England. The Puritans were quickly successful at planting agriculture and creating an efficient community that prospered until 1785 when British troops burned down their settlement while occupying Middlesex County. The Dutch settlers who followed soon moved into what is now West Springfield because they found land available on which to build homes. In 1785, a group of 8 men from Framingham formed the First Congregational Church in what is now West Springfield. This church was later renamed after John Adams – one of America's Founding Fathers – as part of efforts to show support for Adams' politics during his presidency (1789-97). George Washington also attended services at this church during his early years as president (1793-97). After American independence was declared in 1776, many Puritan families left Massachusetts for Rhode Island due to religious persecution there (although others stayed). During Reconstruction times (1865-1913), much activity took place within Southboro before reaching West Springfield where it centered around school teaching opportunities for black students starting from 1865 until white teachers came available starting in 1913. In 1868–69 local merchant Ebenezer Cobb built a gristmill on Mystic River that still stands today and began producing flour commercially; this mill helped contribute greatly to village growth over time as various industries sprang up around it including lumber mills (1901), paper mills (1920), cheese factories (1927), gasoline stations (1929) and more recently car repair businesses (. . .) Today remnants of several earlier pioneer households can be seen scattered throughout town center including: Pemberton House dating back to 1698; Wheeler House built c1800; Snodgrass House built about 1830; Wigglesworth’s Schoolhouse which served grades K-12 from 1834 until 1862 when it became private property; Goodspeed’s Tavern which opened about 1700 with seating for thirty people inside/outside along with storage facilities nearby; Fenton’s Storefront which opened about 1800 with two stories comprising five rooms housing sixty barrels each side accessed through two entrances with liveried doorkeepers responsible for security . . .
