In 1912, the store moved to its current location on Elm Street. In 1928, the store became a part of the Guggenheim Bros., Optical Merchants chain and continued to operate under that name until 1984. In 1985, the Guggenheim Bros., Optical Merchants chain merged with Saks Fifth Avenue and all of their stores were combined into one large mall known as Saks Fifth Avenue West Springfield Mall. At that point, the name of the original optical store changed back to Mrs. L C Hixon's optic shop again and it still operates today as an independently owned business within Saksfifthavenorthamptonmall
West Springfield is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. West Springfield is part of the Springfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an agricultural community on the west side of Boston Common. In 1821, land was purchased from the Native Americans and developed into what became known as "West Springfield." The village grew quickly due to its location close to Boston's business district and its proximity to other villages in the townships that made up Boston Common. By 1860, West Springfield had a population of 10,000 residents and was one of only two settlements in Ipswich Township that did not incorporate as a Village until 1869. In 1862, voters passed a resolution ratifying the Townshend Plan which called for construction of a large new courthouse and jail within three years. Construction began in 1865 but continued into 1867 because of financial problems with the new project. The original courthouse burned down in 1886; however, another building was built on top of it and continues to be used today as the town hall. In 1898, voters passed a resolution approving annexation by Easton Township after significant protests from West Springfieldians who felt they were being left out of development opportunities in their own township. After annexation occurred, West Springfield came under pressure to develop more rapidly than Easton Township which had been slow to react due to its smaller size and lack of resources. In response to this pressure, West Springfield created several parks including Deerfield Park (now known as Harvard University's Deerfield Campus), Newton Park (now home to John F Kennedy Presidential Library) and Pinebrook Park (now home to Emerson College). These developments helped increase access to services for residents living near these parks while also providing some degree of self-sufficiency for those residing east of Forest Hills Road. In 2000, voters approved increasing taxes by 3% in order fund infrastructure projects such as new schools and street repairs throughout town including road widening and resurfacing along I-95 corridor
