West Springfield was first settled in 1636 by Puritans. The town was named for the West River, which at that time flowed through the area. In 1812, a school and church were built in what is now West Springfield. The town remained small until it grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location on the border of two states and its close proximity to Boston. During the American Civil War, West Springfield served as an important military outpost between Massachusetts and New York City. In 1865, when Massachusetts seceded from the United States, West Springfield became part of the new state of Vermont. In 1869, West Springfield became known as the capital of Vermont after Burlington was designated as its official city limits. In 1905, Vermont withdrew from full membership in The United States because of disagreements over tariff rates. As a result, West Springfield lost much of its political power and prominence within Vermont society. However, since World War II has seen a resurgence in interest in WestSpringfield because of its unique history and cultural attractions. Today, it is one of Vermont's most vibrant cities with a rich history to share with visitors!
