West Springfield is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Springfield is located on the Eastern Shore of Massachusetts near New Bedford and Ipswich. The town was first settled in 1630 by Puritans from England who named it after their home village, Westphalia in Germany. In 1793, when the towns of Springfield and Worcester were merged to form Boston, Westphalia became part of Boston's new city limits. However, because it lay within boundary lines for both cities until 1831, Westphalia retained its own name until 1881 when it came down to only "West Springfield". The first settler in what would become Westfield was John Glover in 1796. He founded a small farm that grew into what is now known as Glover's Hill Road. By 1827, over 20 settlers had moved to what would become Westfield from several townships on the eastern shore of Massachusetts. The primary reason for moving was religious: many people living along the Atlantic coast were Baptist missionaries who believed that God had directed them to move inland to escape persecution in England during the Revolutionary War (the war against Great Britain). In 1830, one year after Plymouth Rock became an American naval base under Ulysses S Grant and Commodore John Rodgers during America's successful war with Spain through Operation Neptune's Spear (), some residents decided that they too should have access to education and built a schoolhouse on Meeting Street which served as their community center until 1840 when this building burned down due to faulty construction (). The next year saw another school opening up on Waltham Street which continued serving as such until 1903 when it burned down also due to faulty construction (). In 1831-3 there were three schools open: Greenough School (now Holyoke Community College), Bethel School (now Webster University) and Waltham School (now Emerson College). At this point Easton Academy was opened which later became Emerson College (). In 1836-7 there were four schools open: Greenough School (now Hampden-Sydney High School), Bethel School (now Sterling Hall Colleege), Waltham School (Now Wellesley Colleges) and Easton Academy (); but all but two closed within three years due eitherto lack of enrollment or vandalism by students/staff (). One school did not close however; Bethel School reopened under new management in 1840 as Wellesley Female Seminary () before finally closing again around 1870 due mostly to financial problems (). Ibid., p 7-8 Accordingly, while other communities quickly sprang up throughout central Massachusetts following Grant’s victory over Spain—a pattern that would continue through much of America’s frontier period—Westfield sustained itself primarily through agriculture and instruction;albeit with occasional bursts of industry occasioned by military engagements or special events such as openings of new ports or railroads near the town’s borders. This unique combination has resulted in some interesting physical features associated with early westfieldians—elements like Glover’s Hill Road connecting downtown with rural areas where farms still thrived well into the 19th century—including older buildings still standing today dating back more than two centuries old! For example,. . . Widener Library stands just outside downtown since 1800 while parts of Charter House date back even further including evidence of an original chimney! also Checkers Tavern wound its way around every bend near Center Street between 1800-1850″

West Springfield, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,171 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Boston and south of the city of Springfield. The town's name is derived from English settlers who named it for Westminster Abbey in London. The first Europeans to settle in what is now West Springfield were white New Englanders led by Captain John Smith in 1630-32. They built a chapel and some houses on the north bank of the Merrimack River, just east of present-day Main Street. In 1772, Connecticut Colony merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony, creating an even larger area that included much of what is now West Springfield Township and parts of Easton Township as well. In 1814, when Daniel Webster became secretary of state under President James K. Polk, he organized a committee to survey Indian land grants for future residents in central New England. After visiting West Springfield several times during his travels around the area, Webster approved plans for a town site on the west side of Derby Creek near where today's Main Street and USRoute 3 intersect. The new settlement was called Derbyville after Judge Amos Derby who had donated land for its construction; it began incorporation as West Springfield on December 15th, 1815 West Springfield grew rapidly due to its proximity to Boston and other centers of commerce; by 1830 it had 1 dwelling and 7 farms outlying parcels totaling . By 1860 it had 9 dwellings and 50 acres outlying tracts totaling . In 1870 WSS had 24 dwellings total with an acreageof , making it one of MA’s most populous towns During World War II much effort went into production at three main plants: Fairchild Aircraft Company’s Plant No., Hartford Plant No.,and Welland Arsenal Ammunition Works (now Holtsville) located within WSS boundaries munitions production ceased after 1945 but has been resurrected through various hands including PECO Energy Corporation which operates an open pit mine located adjacent to their plant
