West Springfield is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,872 at the 2010 census. West Springfield is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area were those who migrated from Connecticut in 1636 and 1641 and were followed by other families over the next few decades. The first real settlement took place on April 15, 1795 when Capt. John Trumbull and his men built a small fort on what is now Main Street in what is today downtown West Springfield. It was not until 1814 that the town name West Springfield became permanent when it was given to a corner of Centre Hill Road and Northampton Street; this location had been part of Charlestown since its founding as a Dutch Colony in 1613. In 1872, when Worcester County was divided into two parts, West Springfield got side with Worcester while Easton stayed with Hampden County. In 1933, after years of struggle by locals to keep their community together during prohibition-era growth rates (the alcohol industry dominated east coast towns), referendum passage allowed for Alcoholic Beverage Licensees (ABC) within the town limits instead of individual companies/bars/distributors as had been previously allowed within citylimits; this led to an increase in nightlife activity which caused many businesses closures and loss of jobs throughout the early days of prohibition. When the first Europeans landed in what is now Massachusetts in 1630, they were welcomed with open arms by the indigenous nations. The English settlers, however, soon encountered resistance from the Native Americans. In 1643, a group of Englishmen under the leadership of Captain John Winthrop founded West Springfield on land that had been donated to them by Massachusettet Indian chief Wampanoag. The town was named after Sir William Dawes, who Purchased 1/6th of all present-day Massachusetts Bay Colony from the native chiefs in 1692. Dawes was motivated by his desire to purchase land for white settlement so that "the more numerous and opulent people might be brought within our limits." The town's growth followed a pattern typical of early colonial settlements: its initial development was based on agriculture and trade rather than heavy military or naval activity. This period of growth saw West Springfield become one of the most important towns in Massachusetts due to its location at the junction of several routes connecting Boston with other parts of New England. As part of King Philip's War (1676-78), which pitted English colonists against Native Americans, West Springfield became an important strategic center. During this time, it also saw some significant battles between British forces and Indian allies. In 1724, when Worcester County was created from part of Middlesex County, West Springfield became one of its original towns. It remained an important community until 1835 when it merged into Worcester County as part of a population increase caused by increased travel among nearby villages during the 1830s Fur Trade Boom. During these years there were many changes taking place in America; including large waves OF immigrants coming to new countries during this time period seeking opportunity and better lives opportunities not available back home - such asWest Springfieldians joining up with other groups migrating westward during this time period! With increasing wealth came increasingly sophisticated technologies - such as steamboats - making life easier for those living near coastal cities like Boston andNew York City while also opening up new areas for farming andcommerce opportunities inland! In 1837-38 there was another huge influx OF refugees coming overland from Europe following Napoleon's Invasion Of France By Germany & Austria - many inhabitants joining up with others moving westward along Route 128! Many aspects associated with later American history were born out during this time period as well; like western settlement efforts culminating in Manifest Destiny which led to America becoming both economically powerful AND militarily powerful! A number of factories opened up around West Springfield during this time period (such as Midvale Brewery) supporting local industries while also providing employment for locals throughout much OF Emerson County! Although times have changed since then (with faster growing suburbs popping up all around!), certain aspects about early 20th century West Springfield have stuck around like its close proximity to major metropolitan areas + job opportunities galore!!!
