The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636. It became independent from Massachusetts in 1781 and incorporated as a town on February 10, 1802. On January 1, 1853 West Springfield had a population of 6,534 people. The post office called "West Springfield" until September 15, 1850 then "Springfield". On July 25, 1898 an overflow crowd at a fairgrounds baseball game caused two fires that left 20 buildings including several stores and homes destroyed. In 1937 the new state highway Route 128 was routed through the town via Main Street east to Route 8 (now US Congress Avenue). This opened up much of what had been rural land to development and increased business opportunities for the townspeople who started farming there since then. On October 9, 1974 the Webster-Ashburton Speed bump near US 24 closed while maintenance took place; this created more congestion on Main Street than before since all traffic going into or out of Webster had to go by that intersection now instead of turning south onto Ashburton Street which led away from town center. As result many businesses closed down along with residents because they could no longer get around without cars or buses which made it difficult to do anything other than shop or visit friends and family. In about 2007 work started on relocating Interstate 495 from Exit 99A (Route 128) exit 5A (Plymouth Road) north towards Southbridge across country so that traffic would funnel off I-495 onto Plymouth Rd instead creating more walking/ biking trails available for people to enjoy as well as better signage about where I-495 crossed Plymouth Rd so drivers knew where they were crossing
