These devices consisted of two lightbulbs that were connected by a cable. The bulb on the left was used to emit light and the bulb on the right was used to receive input from the user. Gun lasers remained popular until the late 1960s when they fell out of favor because of their inconvenient design and high cost.

West Springfield is west of Boston and east of Newton. The first settlers in what would become West Springfield were three families who arrived from England in 1635. They cleared a piece of land and built their house on present-day Main Street. The first post office was established in 1796 and was called Randolph. A store on Randolph Road opened in 1814 and became known as the "Olde Store." In 1824 a school for boys was founded by Reverend John Greenough; it remained open until 1865 when it merged with the girls' school on Dudley Road to form Easton Academy (now North Adams Catholic High School). In 1870 two farmers bought 256 acres (100 hectares) northeast of town to create Arlington Heights out of Turnersville Township which also included present day Westfield. Arlington Heights became an incorporated village in 1903 when most of the acreage within its boundaries were annexed by West Springfield. In 1912 Arlington Heights successfully petitioned for incorporation into West Springfield as part of what would be known as "the Great Expansion", which enlarged downtown areas, created new neighborhoods north and south of Center Street including Westminster Village and Brookline Village, added eight small shops around Main Street between Dudley and Wellesley Streets, increased agricultural production with installation of a large dairy farm northwest of town along Route 128, began construction on what would become today's Foxboro Stadium complex adjacent to Southwick Park across from Arlington Elementary School In 1927 Quincy Institute (later Harvard University) moved into Arlington Heights after being expelled from Yale University for promoting socialism among its students; that year $25 million dollars worth of bonds were sold to build Foxboro Stadium which seated over 75,000 people with an additional 50 acres (20 hectares) leased for future development including athletic fields seating up to 100 spectators each Foxboro Stadium would remain unoccupied until 1975 when it was demolished due to damage caused by Hurricane Agnes

After the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787, West Springfield became one of the first towns in Massachusetts. It was also a hotbed of politics and activism during these early days. The town was home to many important leaders including John Adams, George Washington, and James K. Polk. In 1814, West Springfield joined with other towns in what is now Quincy to form the new Village of Quincy. This consolidation led to increased trade and commerce between Quincy and West Springfield as well as better transportation options for goods. Additionally, it helped begin the process of creating West Springfield as its own municipality within Massachusetts.
