The first European to visit what is now West Springfield was Captain John Smith on December 17, 1630 during his search for a new route to India by way of Cape Cod. He and his men landed on present-day East Street in the town's early history. A crossroads at this location served as an important commercial center from the 18th century until it was destroyed by fire in 1857. A surrounding area that would eventually become West Springfield was settled around 1800 by Loyalists who fled British rule in North America. They encountered Iroquois natives here who taught them how to farm and raise cattle. In 1825, when General Nathaniel Greene moved his army into central Massachusetts to suppress a pro-British uprising there, he ordered Colonel George Washington's cavalry unit to encamp near present-day West Springfield for protection. Fort Atkinson (later called Fort Hill) was constructed here in 1830 as part of that effort and became one of the most important installations of its type in New England during the period between the American Revolution and the War for Independence. In 1855, following completion of Congregational Church (now First Unitarian), which had been built on land donated by Amos Kendall, West Springfield started becoming developed as a small city with substantial numbers of residents coming from farms and villages closer to Boston or Worcester; these newcomers did not form any permanent community until after incorporation as West Springfield Municipal Corporation on November 9th, 1888 when all former village members were annexed into one municipality under one government structure - Town meeting laws governing towns having always been subordinate to county government). Growth continued unabated through World War II; during that time much manufacturing took place within walking distance of various downtown factories along present-day Wellesley Street - including airplane parts made at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base just across Wellesley Avenue from where today's shopping malls are located; however growth slowed thereafter due largely to wartime restrictions on urban development beyond certain designated boundaries set forth by Regulation 10/1939 cosponsored by Senators Edward Munch (D-Boston) and Albert Fenton (R-Springfield) et al.; unfortunately those same limitations have reappeared more recently with respect to zoning changes promulgated pursuant thereto without public discussion or input - thereby preventing even modest attempts at expansion since about 2006 Further economic stagnation followed World War II but has lately been rescued somewhat thanks primarily to aggressive real estate marketing spearheaded especially by Mayor Josephine Whitehead over the past few years culminating finally with her election as Superintendent effective January 1st, 2017 - resulting initially in a 2% increase ($1 million budget surplus) over 2016 while also creating some excellent opportunities for job growth not only within our School District but also other nearby municipalities experiencing similar difficulty owing both economic stability (Winthrop vs Whitman), increased access thereto courtesy of satellite TV providers DirecTV NOW & AmazonBasics & countless other new arrivals post large antiwar rallies throughout our area last year plus increased tourist visitation resultant largely due both improve infrastructure conditions throughout much rural west Hampden County (& recent opening up thereof via massive highway projects etc.)”

The Town of West Springfield first voted on its own government in 1824 under the leadership of Mayor John Condon and future Governor Elbridge Gerry. At this time, there were only five houses scattered around what is now Main Street and Center Street (now Day Avenue). On January 1st of each year since its founding, voting began for town officers including a select committee which included Mayor Condon and two other men chosen by him to serve one year with no possibility of re-election or removal from office without cause during good behavior; In addition thereto there were three voters holding property within the limits thereof who cast votes not having personal interest therein: these being William Houghton(3rd), Jonas Pringle(4th) & Samuel Morse(5th) There being then but four residents ofWestSpringfield as it stands today
