When the town of West Springfield was founded in 1795, it was a small village with a population of about eighty. The only means of defense for the villagers were handguns and shotguns. In 1847, the town government decided to build a schoolhouse and armory in order to protect its citizens from possible attacks by Native Americans. The rifle company that was started in West Springfield was called “The Volunteer Rifle Company” and it served as the primary source of weapons for the militia during the American Revolution. After America won their independence from Great Britain, many new gun companies were formed including “The United States Armory” which became known as “America’s First Gun Factory”. This factory produced rifles for both military and sporting use until 1865 when it closed because of financial difficulties. By 1820, there had already been some experimentation with firearms involving powder shot fired from cannons into targets at a distance and this led to what is now known as muzzleloading firearms or simply muskets. In 1821, Congress passed an act entitled An Act To provide For A System Ofgun Registration AndStockpilingThat Would RegulateFirearmManufacturersAnd sellers Within Our Dominion .This act provided for mandatory registration of all firearm manufacturers within our borders and also mandated that each gun owner must keep his firearm safe and secure inside his home or place of business. It should be noted that this law did not take effect until eighteen months later when President James K Polk signed it into law on December 3rd,. After implementation of this important legislation, ammunition prices began to plummet due to overproduction caused by English manufacturers who could not meet American demand for munitions
