The first water pistols were designed in 1795 by Josiah Swift and Nicholas-Jacques Conte. A total of eleven different types of pistols were designed between 1807 and 1815, but the Colt Model 1836 is generally considered to be the first successful self-loading revolver. On October 15, 1800, a group of men under the leadership of Captain Samuel Slater took up arms against American forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The weapons used were crude firearms such as hoes and tomahawks, but they inflicted great damage on British troops. This success inspired others to develop similar weapons. In 1807, John Brown began manufacturing revolvers in Watertown, Massachusetts. He named his company "Brown & Wesson" after his friends Daniel Webster and James K. Polk who had also helped lead the fight for independence from Great Britain. The first pistols made by Brown & Wesson were called "Patriots". Later that year, George Washington issued a proclamation calling for all citizens to arm themselves with appropriate arms in order to resist British aggression. In response, Brown & Wesson produced additional handguns including the "Pursuit" revolver which was able to fire two rounds per magazine instead of one. After several years of production, Brown & Wesson decided it was necessary to move their manufacturing operations from Watertown to Philadelphia due to increased competition from other gunmakers throughout America. However, Brown & Wesson continued production in Delaware until 1857 when they finally ceased operations in America altogether due to increasing cost and competition from imported guns
