In 1812, when Worcester County was created from Middlesex County, Watertown became one of its townships. In 1835 it became a village charter under the name Great Towne Hall. On July 6th of that year it united with Southborough to form what would become Boston Township (later Arlington). On October 15th 1861 it became a city charter with its own government as well as annexation intoBoston; however this merger did not happen until November 3rd 1966 following an act by then Mayor John F Kennedy which merged both cities' land use laws into one uniform ordinance effective January 1st 1967. Watertown's rich history began with its role as headquarters for Operation Overflow during World War II and continues today with many famous people being born or raised here including Bill Gates and Barack Obama
