Watertown, Massachusetts is home to one of the most famous scopes in all of history- the Pequot Indian Scandal Telescope. This telescope was used by scientist John Herschel to study the stars and planets. The telescope was donated to the Watertown Historical Society in 1896 by Dr. George Peabody. The society has been preserved and operated as a museum ever since. The history of the Pequot Indian Scandal Telescope can be traced back to 1837 when Reverend Samuel Morse donated a telescope to his monastery in Watertown, MA. After using this new instrument for some time, Reverend Morse realized that it was not powerful enough to view objects at a distance. He offered his old two-meter reflector Telescope (which he had built himself) to use as a scopes’s mirror instead. Dr. George Peabody, who owned the Observatory at Yale University, agreed to donate his three-acre property on which Watertown High School now stands for $1,000 in 1876 in order to build a larger observatory on site that would include aPequot Indian Scandal Telescope (PIT). Dr. Peabody renamed his new observatory “The Herschel Observatory” after American astronomer John Herschel who donated the original mirror for this telescope in 1839. In 1895, Doctor Edwin Hubble became one of the first peopleto see faint galaxies beyond our own Milky Way galaxy with his 2 meter peepers mounted on an eighty foot high aluminum tripod called Hubble’s Camera! In 1932, Explorer 5 located Mars! With more than seventy years of rigorous public service under its belt within amateur astronomy communities aroundthe world, The Herschel Observatory has played an essential rolein promoting Amateur Astronomy throughout its long history!

The population was 53,834 at the 2000 census. The name "Watertown" is an anglicization of the Indian word Wateam meaning "watercourse." The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years. In 1636, English colonists from Plymouth found and claimed a small fishing village on the Mystic River called Weymouth after their captain's son, Peter Weymouth. The name stuck and when Plymouth Colony dissolved in 1688, its remaining inhabitants took up residence at Weymouth while they developed new settlements elsewhere. In 1764, Watertown became part of the new Massachusetts colony under George Washington as part of what was known as New England Confederation. The town grew rapidly due to its location near major trade routes and its access to navigable waterways. By 1800, Watertown had reached a peak population of 50,000 people but began to decline during the 18th century amid waves of migration to larger metropolitan areas throughout New England. However, Watertown continued to grow steadily through much of the 19th century as smaller communities merged into it until it reached its present size. By 1920, water shortages were becoming increasingly severe in Boston; floods occurred throughout 1922-1923; local officials responded with initiatives such as conservation measures and affordable housing programs which led to increased development around water resources within town limits

During World War II, Nazi Germany began using telescopes to study the moon and other planets. This led to their defeat in 1945 and the end of their telescope program.
