In 1861, Samuel Colt created the first revolver in America. It was called the Colt revolver and was used by law enforcement officials and militia officers in America until it was replaced by the revolver pistol in 1907. The Watertown Rifle and Pistol Club Championship began as a hobbyist event on October 15th, 1892 with two rifles and three pistols. The club made its debut at Barnes Hall located on State Street in Watertown. From then on, it became an annual event that attracted top shooters from all over New England. First place went to John Sennett of Pittsfield with a score of 38-25-1; second place went to Alfred Hurlbut of Worcester with a score of 36-30-2; third place went to George Fenton of Ipswich with a score of 34-35-3; fourth place went to Amos Javanofsky of Springfield with a score of 32-35-4
