Watertown, Massachusetts is a town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Watertown is part of the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Watertown was Nicholas French in 1685. Englishman John Provost and his family moved to this area from Easton in 1704. Provost donated land for a white school on the banks of the Rte 9 bridge over the Little River in 1710-11. The first schoolmaster was Colonel John Pownal who taught there from 1712 until his death in 1718. In 1807, Captain James Kettles and six other men founded Kettlesville on what is now Middlesex Street within present day Watertown limits; they named their community after him as he had been an important figure early on thereabouts. A new courthouse and jail were built here between 1809-13 by order of Governor Peterborough under contract with Samuel Prescott; it was also used temporarily as a hospital during the American Revolution (1775-79). In 1812-15 Isaac Clark purchased 640 acres near present day Northampton Street and Main Street for $2,500 from Nicholas French; he named it Clark's Valley after himself and laid out a farming village around it which included about 200 homes (one house per acre) . He served as Committee Chairman for Burlington District #3 from 1824 to 1830 and again from 1840 to 1845; he also represented Burlington Township (now West End) on several occasions including two terms as Mayor from 1830 to 1835 Clark's Village came into being when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote "The Wabash" in April 1850 while living at Galesburg, Illinois before moving back eastward to Watertown that fall; he published it here under its original title beginning with "The Return of Ethan Allen". He died suddenly only three weeks later at age 72 while staying at his home there followed by burial nearby beside his wife Hannah .
