Watertown's name comes from two ponds that were located near the original town meetinghouse: Wauwatosa Creek and Wenham Creek. The first settlers named their new community "Wenham" after Sir John Wenham, 1st Baronet (1607-1688), an English nobleman who had purchased land in present-day Watertown from Massachusett Indians in 1631. In honor of his purchase, Wenham's estate was renamed "Watertown" in 1635 by General Courtor Roger Williams. When it became clear that New England would become a separate British colony following King George III's Proclamation of 1765 calling for all British possessions to be organized into provinces under a single government, many of the original colonists wanted to stay put and continue enjoying their old Shotts Pond property which they called "The Township". However, others decided to move away from Connecticut because of its harsh winters and poor soil quality; among these were some key founders of Watertown such as Roger Williams and Nathaniel Eaton. On December 12th 1630 a group of Puritans led by Roger Williams came down Payment Brook valley to find that there was already another community established there - Westborough - with about 20 people inhabiting what is now downtown Watertown limits on what is now Franklin Street between State Street and Institute Street/Wenham Road today... Although they did not yet have any church or governmental structure they began informal meetings here soon after arriving at PembrokeJune 15th when Revdiden William Brewster preached.. These early meetings served as both a congress for governing themselves and also acted as an early proto-judicial body... On January 2nd [1631] our first town meeting took place with Revdiden William Brewster presiding over it... By this time we had 5 members including Mr Richard Copley who later became First Baptist Minister here The first regulation made by this initial Town Meeting was to erect public markets within convenient distance where goods could be sold without coming into contact with human beings This market still stands today just eastbound on SpringHill Road opposite Northampton High School
