Watertown was first settled in 1637 by Puritan colonists from England. The town had a population of 10 people when it was incorporated as a village in 1786. In 1812, Watertown became an independent city and remained so until 1959. During its time as an independent city, Watertown enacted several landmark ordinances including one that allowed for women to vote. The main thoroughfare in downtown Watertown is Main Street which runs through the heart of the community and connects all of its constituent neighborhoods. The oldest continuously inhabited home in Watertown dates back to 1637 and is located on Main Street just west of Center Avenue. One hundred years later, on July 4th, 1892, the community erected a commodious stone building at 2 SOUTH Main Street to serve as their first hallowed ground where citizens could gather together for religious services or meetings related to their political aspirations or other concerns during this period prior to incorporation into Quincy Township on November 3rd following year under Act No 7 of 1892 (the Constitution Party’s Platform). In 1898-1900, new public works were authorized by then-Mayor John Holbrook including erection of two large brick fire engines which still graces Main Street today - one built with funds raised from subscriptions among citizens and anotherenneed from state appropriation passed after annexation into Quincy Township; these engines are now used for ceremonial purposes only when needed for special events such as street cleaning or demonstrations unrelated to fire protection purposes! On December 10th 1902 due largely to building efforts spearheaded by Mrs Florence Hancock (later Mrs James Fitzgerald), ladies Auxiliary #2 Surgical Nurses organized themselves into what would become known as “The Ladies auxiliary society” effective January 1st 1903 with Mrs Florence Hancock presiding over officers elected annually by membership rather than appointment! This group continues monthly meeting until present day! On October 1st 1903 President Charles Evans delivered an address marking the inauguration dateof our City Marshal who had replaced late Mayor John Holbrook following his death on September 26th 1902 due complications brought aboutby pneumonia contracted while performing surgery….A plaque dedicatedto City Marshal Charles Evans remains today near cornerof State & Market Streets – see photo below

One important event that took place at Watertown during this time was when abolitionists met here to consider their strategy for combating slavery throughout New England. This meeting helped start what would eventually become known as freedom marches through Massachusetts cities such as Boston and Worcester! Watertown also played an important role during WWI when many factories were set up here to produce munitions for America's war effort. AfterWWI ended, many jobs leftWatertown and it slowly lost its importance as a manufacturing center until recent times when new technology has taken over some of these old jobs!
