Watertown is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, situated on the MA-1 highway about 8 miles (13 km) south of New Bedford. The population was 25,752 as of the 2010 census. Watertown's downtown is one of the most significant economic centres in Plymouth County. It is home to many large businesses and government institutions including the New England Aquarium and The Pequot Museum of Art. The town was founded by Puritan settlers in 1636. Watertown grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War due to its strategic location at the mouth of the river Wellfleet and its harbour for shipping goods from Boston. In 1825, Watertown became an incorporated village after it passed a referendum with a majority vote that approved incorporation by act of the General Court. A canal was built through town and water supplies were improved in order to support larger towns such as Lowell and Framingham; however, these improvements did not result in increased traffic or growth at Watertown itself, which continued to decline throughout much of the 19th century. During World War II, Watertown played an important role as a munitions plant producing bombs used in battles across Europe. However, today most residents enjoyIDEAS activities such as swimming, fishing, biking and walking their dogs around central square called "Square One". In recent years there has been an effort underway to revitalize downtown Watertown with new restaurants/bars/ cafes etc., while also preserving some historical aspects like streetscapes

Watertown is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. Watertown was founded in 1795 by General John Adams and his wife Abigail Adams. It became a city in 1853. The current mayor of Watertown is Marty Walsh. Watertown's history can be traced back to 1795 when General John Adams and his wife AbigailAdams founded the town of Watertown on the banks of the Wachusett River, about 25 miles south-southwest of Springfield, Massachusetts. The name "Watertown" may have been chosen because it lay near water resources such as rivers and ponds. The first permanent settler in what would become Watertown was Captain Peter Coleman who built a cabin on what is now School Street in 1797. In 1800, Captain Coleman's son Samuel erected a log courthouse on Meetinghouse Hill which served as the first municipal building in what would eventually become Watertown. In 1802, captain Coleman’s grandson Daniel bought land adjoining present-day State Road 93 and built an estate known today as Point Lookout Manor which included much of what is now downtown Watertown including the former home of Mayor John Walsh (now within City Hall). On July 1st, 1824 Charles Willard purchased from Captains Coleman and Daniel acreage comprising part of modern day Downtown Watertown for $500 linear feet (or 20 acres). This purchase marked the beginning of that area becoming part of Ground Zero for America’s largest fire ever – the Great Fire of1846 which destroyed most if not all downtown buildings and killed over one hundred people In 1865 Charles Willard donated an additional two acres to form Government Street which runs parallel topresent day Main Street within today’s boundaries Of course many other important landmarks were added over time…the old Armory building located just eastsideof Government Street where Main meets State Road now houses First National Bank while Mail & Telegraph Building stands across Vinegar Row from Market Square approximately where Fourth Avenue currently intersects MainStreet It should be noted that although many buildings have changed hands through various iterations throughout its history; most notably during Mayor Walsh’s tenure; DowntownWatertown has remained essentially unchanged since he took office more than 25 years ago! In 1872 Reverend Ezra Stiles organized what would become Congregational United Church with services being held at Park Place until moved to their current location on North Kingstown Avenue in 1895 during this time frame too numerous stores/machinery went up around town Centre square had grown stale so Rev Stiles started work on developingwhat is now known as Waterside Walk leading downriver past present day Union Station thence terminating atpresent day Fenway Park
