The first permanent settler in what would become Watertown was John Winthrop who arrived there with his family in 1636. Winthrop's nephew, Samuel Adams built the first house there and soon other families followed suit. By 1700, Watertown had a population of over 100 people and consisted of four streets (Old Town Street ran from north to south), two churches (the First Baptist Church dates back to 1711 and the Second Congregational Church to 1775), several businesses including one tavern (the Tavern of Boston bequeathed its building to Watertown proper on December 2, 1851) and three miles of riverfront beach frontage along both banks of the Mystic River. In 1785, when Watertown became an independent township, it retained many of its original buildings and became known as one of America's most thriving frontier towns with sizable industries such as shipbuilding and tanning; however, by 1800 much of these activity had shifted to larger cities such as Boston or New York City because those cities were developing more sophisticated transportation systems that could easily carry goods across state lines into new markets outside Massachusetts. After escaping persecution at home they set about building a society where religious freedom was fundamental among them In short order they had erected public buildings such as meetinghouses and court houses as well as private homes which still stand today including John Adams’s Mansion dating back to 1734 which is now used by local historians annually during Poetry Day ceremonies
