Watertown was established in 1795 as a small village on the west bank of the river Orinoco, about south of modern-day Springfield. In 1825, it became an incorporated town and has since grown to become one of the largest towns in Massachusetts. The name derives from "Waterville", an Indian word meaning "the place where water flows". Watertown is located on both banks of the River Orinoco and borders fields to the north and east, Lake George to the south and west, andSpringfield to the northwest. According to The Adams Report (1827), "The whole town [of Watertown] lay within a few rods of each other; there were only two houses standing before its incorporation." In 1795, when Congress passed an act creating Hampden County, it included Watertown among its boundaries. On May 8 that year, Samuel Adams wrote in support of this decision: "I think they have done us very much good by making us partakers in their labours" Although Watertown had no resident minister until 1798 when Drs John Collins and Nicholas Hervey arrived from nearby Worcester Parish to begin services there (the first such outpost in what would become Massachusettes), early church records indicate that worshipers came from all over Hampden County for religious services held at home or at taverns around the village center during summer months.. Reverend James Morehead officiated at Baptisms on July 6th and December 5th,, 1798; Mary Higginson baptized Rebecca Pinkney alias Fenton on October 3rd 1800; William Post officiated at Marriage ceremonies on May 15th 1801 between Sarah Higginson (widowed Aaron Post) and Levi Parsons Reverend John Collins officiated also at Baptism ceremonies for Nancy Smith alias Cowan January 25th 1800; Increase Mather officiated solemnly under license March 10th 1800 for Jonathan Edwards’ burial . . .
