The population grew rapidly during World War II, reaching 100,000 by 1945. However, during that period Watertown experienced several economic downturns which led to its current decline; however housing prices have begun trending upwards again in recent years thanks to new development around town squares and within walking distance of many businesses. Although water-powered mills began operating here even before English settlers arrived (1630), Windham mill started operations about 1690 as one of earliest textile mills in North America Cotton plantations were established along both sides ot Otter River beginning about 1710 until they were shutdown c1780 because cotton production became too expensive with improved machines developed for growing other crops . British soldiers burned down Windham mill on 10/1/1777 during their raid against Wethersett plantation near contemporary Bound Brook The first real water supply for this area came from melting snowmelt coming off the mountains eastward onto farmlands west of river where local people dug ditches and used pumpkins or buckets filled with rainwater to generate electricity while running hot airifiers making skis or wagons pulling carts carrying goods all over central Massachusettes

On October 25, 1829, Watertown passed an act incorporating as a village and adopting its present name. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's army came through Watertown on their way to battle in North Carolina; many people were killed or wounded and some homes were burned down.
