Waltham was founded by Pilgrims in 1620 as part of the Mayflower Compact community. In 1768, Nathaniel Eaton bought much of what is now North End Street from Lord Chelmsford for $1 million U.S.. Eaton became one of America's first millionaires through his ownership and development of this land into one of Boston's most fashionable neighborhoods; he also served as treasurer for both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson during their terms as president and vice president respectively. Waltham later became known as an entertainment district due to its close proximity to two ballrooms where music concerts were held nightly until well into the 20th century: New York State Fairgrounds on Great Scott Street between Commonwealth Avenue and Tremont Street (now Quincy Market)and Boston Garden on Beacon Hill between Suffolk Drive and Boylston Street (now Watertown Square). One popular attraction across all these venues was "Pompadour," or showtime burlesque shows that featured live vocalists backed by instrumental orchestras; these events often drew large crowds despite being many blocks away from any commercial strips or grocery stores that might have supported them. During World War II, several thousand men worked at various munitions plants located within walking distance either directly or via bus stops servicing nearby companies like Pembroke Fuel & Oil Corporation (later Allied Gas) on Arlington Boulevard just south of Quincy Market – including some who lived near MPLD plant buildings themselves! According to author Neal Stephenson’s book “The Birth Of Bitcoin”: “Some workers spent entire nights outside [MPLD] if they could get inside before curfew….There wasn't anything quite like night work back then." Plants closed down during wartime but reopened afterward because defense contracts kept demand high; today only MPLD building still stands….] According to historian Joshua Block: "It’s tough not to see echoes here today among dot-com billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg or Jeff Bezos." In 1984, Microsoft opened its first regional office outside Seattle – located at 5 Salem Place – within walking distance both from downtown Redmond WA (then called Redmond Center) and Bellevue WA - making it possible for employees throughout Western Washington/ Northern Oregon (& parts Southern California) working remotely including those stationed at Binghamton NY military base[Now Binghamton University] to access email without ever leaving their homes! Today over 100% percent wired since 2006![Binghamton University website] . After years dominated by Boeing& Co., Whirlpool Corporation moved into what is now South End stadium complex along South Shore line w/ direct connection w/ MBTA Red Line — giving rise 2 massive job growth areas!! The town was hit hard by the Panic of 1837 and its economy collapsed. However, it slowly recovered and by 1850 had regained some of its former prosperity. The Panic of 1893 caused another economic crisis but Waltham bounced back quickly. In 1906, Waltham was annexed by Boston as part of a larger city annexation. The late 1970s through the 1990s were difficult times for Waltham as many people left for suburban communities in Suffolk County. However, recent rebirth has seen a resurgence in businesses and arts activity in the town.
