Hawthorne's novel "Wuthering Heights" takes its name from one of the buildings on Beacon Hill then known as "Hawthorne House". In 1853, United States Senator John Fenton became the first person to be elected from Massachusetts since colonial times when he won an uncontested election over Aaron Burr. After serving two terms as U.S senator he ran for reelection and lost toAndrew Jackson but regained office following his victory over Jackson in 1860. As president he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1865 into law which prohibited racial discrimination in all aspects of American life including education and employment After Reconstruction Waltham experienced rapid growth with new construction such as a movie theater (the Regal)and a shopping mall which opened in 1978 called The Mall atrium which anchored One Arcade Plaza across from Fenway Park
