Waltham is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 51,916 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Massachusetts after Somerville. Waltham was first settled by English colonists in 1624 and became an independent municipality in 1786. The Municipal Court Building, now part of the Amtrak station in Waltham, was built between 1878 and 1880 as one of the first public buildings on the new town square. The name "Waltham" comes from a word meaning "a place well known for its fruit trees." A group of settlers led by John Winthrop founded what would become Waltham on April 15, 1624 on land that had been given to them by King Philip II of Spain. At first only men were allowed to settle there; later women and children were admitted as well. The original outlying settlements were called West Roxbury (later Ipswich), East Roxbury (later Bedford) and Northampton Neck (later Northampton). In 1786, when Waltham became an independent municipality, it voted to adopt a new form of government which would be more democratic than earlier models. This change was made possible by passage of a bill through the Massachusetts General Court that increased representation for towns with over 25 residents from one vote to three votes each. The Municipal Court Building was built between 1878 and 1880 as one of the first public buildings on the new town square. Today it houses several businesses including Memorial Hall Library which opened its doors in 1922 after serving as a branch library for many years before that. In 2006, Town Meeting approved plans to demolish portions of both sides of First Street between Hope Road and Park Avenue so that land can be used for parking lot expansions adjacent to Memorial Hall Library instead sited adjacent to Hope Road where most people live today!
Waltham is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. Waltham was founded in 1630 by Puritans as a small trading post on the Mystic River. In 1853, the town was consolidated with Newton and became one of the thirty-six towns in Massachusetts. The first mention of Waltham comes from John Winthrop in his diary entry for September 2, 1630: "I went out into a great body of water which lay before us on this side [the Mystic River], and I saw an house built upon piles upon that side." Winthrop's journal entry also mentions "a river" which he names "The Mystic". This may be reference to the now defunct American Telephone & Telegraph Company line that ran through Waltham between White Plains and Easton; it is now part of New York State Route 11. In 1768, Englishman Samuel Adams settled in Waltham after moving from Northampton. He began to grow crops and raise sheep near his home on West Street while continuing to trade with England. In 1798, he opened a store at 20 Main Street where he sold goods including cloth, shoes, molasses and butter until his business crashed due to economic depression caused by the French Revolutionary War. A new store opened at 313 Meeting House Road in 1800 which lasted until 1906 when it burned down due to an electrical fire inside the building. At its peak there were over 100 stores operating in Waltham retailing items such as clothing, groceries, boots and saddles as well as toys and other children's products. A new shopping mall called Park Plaza opened adjacent to Unity Village Shopping Center south of downtown Waltham in 1987 but closed within two years due to low sales led by high competition from larger malls across MA.. After years of decline during the 1990s recession many merchants closed their doors or converted their buildings into apartments making it difficult for shoppers who wanted access to local businesses since most stores had been shuttered or converted into residential units themselves during that time period.. A few exceptions include Gilt inc., which continued operations until 2006 selling both online and brick-and-mortar items despite struggles with budget cuts ; Olde England Furniture Junction (now Joe's Emporium) which reopened after being closed for several years following bankruptcy; Boston Tea Party Museum - currently operates as an antique storeInside Nathan Cummings School - used to be Home Depot before they bought it outright On October 15th 1861 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote: 'I have been much interested lately about our dear old Southold Church - here we go back more than three hundred Years ago'. On December 5th 1861 Nathaniel Hawthorne donated land off Walnut Hill Road east of present day Quincy Market so that Southold could build a church on it according to plans drawn up by Reverend Ebenezer Eliot under direction of Bishop Increase Mathers.. Reverend Eliot consecrated Southold Church on Valentine's Day 1863 .. On May 6th 1865 just two weeks before Union soldiers attacked Fort Sumter Nathaniel Hawthorne donated another parcel of land off Walnut Hill Road east of Quincy Market towards Fort Sumter .. The fortifications around Sumter were destroyed soon afterwards so no records survive indicating what happened with this additional donation
