Over time other colonists followed suit and various names were chosen for early settlements including West Roxbury (1841), East Winthrop (1849), North Adams (1863), Everett (1870), Arlington Heights (1900) and Allston/Brighton Hills (1930). The first store opened in 1834 at Whatley's Ford along present day Green Street in what is now Downtown Waltham. By 1840 there were twelve stores open along with three boardinghouses catering to soldiers stationed at Fort Point on Wareham Bay. At this time most residents worked either as farmers or mechanics creating an agricultural proletariat which formed the backbone of early industrial growth within Greater Boston over the next century. In 1824, Waltham became a part of the newly formed Rockland County. After several boundary changes in 1830 and 1838, Waltham grew increasingly large until it reached its current size of 9,986 residents as of 2010. The history of Waltham began with Puritan settlers who arrived in 1631 from England following the Great Migration under pressure from religious persecution back home. By 1720, there were over 100 people living in the town limits; however this number decreased precipitously over time because many died during the early years of settlement due to violence or disease brought over by English immigrants seeking land grants and new opportunities for themselves and their families. In 1724, when Rockland County was created from part of Middlesex County, most of what would become Waltham lay within its borders; but despite this limitation on growth, much progress was made during that decade including construction on what would become one of Massachusettes’ first roads-the North Road which ran through downtown Waltham along present day Quincy Street before turning east onto Beacon Street-and incorporation into Rockland County (though still maintaining some vestige of rural autonomy). In 1824 after becoming a part of Rockland County–still maintaining some vestige of rural autonomy–Waltham experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center due to increased demand for goods produced by locals such as cheese and flour among other things.
