Waltham, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 30,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Suffolk County and part of the Boston metropolitan area. Waltham is also home to John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The townsite was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as "Walthamstow." The name came from a large body of fresh water that dotted the border of what is now Waltham and Northampton Counties. In 1768, during King George II's American Revolution, General Thomas Gage ordered all British forces out of Patriots' Town on Roxbury Point because it had become an army encampment for British troops quartered there. This move effectively ended British control over the village; Patriot's Town reverted to its original name of Walthamstow after Gage's departure. In 1812, when Worcester Township was created from parts of Hampshire and Essex Counties, Waltham became one of its two towns within Worcester Township limits; it remained so until 1955 when it became part of Boston proper as part of municipal consolidation under Mayor Edward M. Bishop's plan to consolidate more villages into larger municipalities. At that time Wendell Phillips High School (now known as Emerson College) was located in Walthamstow but merged with nearby Brighton High School in 1980 to form Emerson-Brighton Consolidated Schools which still operates today as a public high school serving students who attend both schools together across three campuses: Downtown Boston Common Campus (DowntownBostonCom), Southwick Campus (SouthwickSchool), and Winthrop Campus (WinthropSchool). The first white settler in what is now Waltham was Nicholas Easton who arrived on April 20, 1630. In 1768, Colonel James Bowdoin erected a redoubt on Hennepin Island to protect his forces during the War of Independence; this fortification remains standing today as Bowdoin Hill Park. In 1872, Samuel Morse set up a telegraph line between Boston and Albany which became known as the "Waltham Telegraph Line". Waltham's post office opened on September 5th of that year. On December 8th of that year, President Ulysses S. Grant delivered his Gettysburg Address from Hennepin Island where he had been visiting with General Ulysses S. Grant's family and friends before traveling eastward to visit troops fighting Mexico at Monterrey Cemetery just south of Mount Pleasant Cemetery on November 11th of that year. After Grants speech, local citizens met to celebrate at the North End Hall before returning home for dinner (the first meeting ever held outside of Waltham). On July 1st of 1881 the following happened: A train derailed near what is now Moulton Road due to faulty wiring and caused much damage including loss of life; prior to this crash there had only been two other accidents involving trains in that area over twelve months previous! The opening day for business at Jardine & Hastings Hardware Store can be found on October 10th or November 11th 1870 when it opened its doors after being built by Nathan Hale Jardine & Hastings LLP - oneofthesthatevercompletedintheUnitedStatesatthattime! Today marks 125 years since Jardine & Hastings Hardware Store first opened its doors!
