In 1861, when Boston seceded from the United States, Waltham voted to remain within the new country under the name of “Walthamstow”. After World War I ended in 1918, many businesses closed down due to prohibition which caused a decrease in gun sales throughout New England. Waltham is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,593 at the 2010 census. The name derived from Waltham Abbey, which was originally part of the parish of Southwell and now lies within the town limits. The first settlers in what is now Waltham were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1636. They built a small trading post on the southern tip of Long Island Sound and named it "Waltham", after their native village of Walthamstow in England. In 1753, when the British Crown ceded all of Long Island to France under the Treaty of Paris, Waltham became part of Boston with its own government and identity. The first settler to be named for Waltham was Jonas Adolphus Pollock (1722-1800), an immigrant from Denmark who bought land near present-day Watertown and founded Pollock's Farmstead in 1754. In 1810, John Higginson moved his family from Ipswich to Waltham because he felt that Ipswich could not support them anymore; they remain there to this day. In 1814, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line between Boston and New York City through Waltham using wire brought overland by horseback rider Amos Kendall; however, this experiment failed due to interference along the way by other landowners along the then-rural route between Harvard University and New York City. However, Morse’s failure did inspire George Stephenson to build his first locomotive at Emmitsburg Station outside Baltimore during 1819–20 – this engine would become one of America’s most famous tourist attractions known as “The Great Northern Railway” or “The NSR” for short – making it possible for commuters throughout Northeastern America to reach their destinations without need for carriage or stage coaches or ferries! Kendall's crossing has been commemorated with a statue erected on Route 9 west of town by local organizations including Friends Meeting House (1893) & First Church (1899). Nearby is also located today President John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum - open daily since 1978 - whose building houses many artifacts related to our community including historical records dating back more than 200 years

In 1715, Waltham became a parish and in 1802 it became an incorporated town. It lost its status as an incorporated town in 1973 but regained it in 2001. The first settlers in what is now Waltham were men who had come overland from England in 1636 and 1637. They built a small cabin on the banks of the river Androscoggin near present-day Quincy Street. The first post office was established here on October 12, 1700, by order of General David Dudley Randall with John Winthrop as postmaster. In 1715, the manor of Easton passed from Edmund Campion to John Winthrop and his wife Katherine Parrington for life (the land now comprises most of Quincy). This gave rise to rumors that young Mrs. Winthrop may have been bribed by her husband into selling her portion of the house and lot to him; however this never happened and she continued to live there until her death in 1743/4. On February 21st, 1735 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "A Visit to Waltham" which illustrated his poem "The Gouty Lady". In 1802, Boston removed all its citizens eastward along Meeting Street towards Castlepoint because they feared a possible attack by Native Americans known as the Wyandots or Mohawks led by Uncas Keyes (a member of Congress fromMassachusetts). Shortly after this move took place, Waltham's only store closed down due to lack of business; it reopened one week later under new management with groceries being sold instead includingMrs Humphrey's Nursery Goods which remain open today at 201 Old North Road across from Webster University Continuing their tradition as America's oldest grocery storeman still running today! In 1893 James Smeaton opened up his bakery on King Street corner Haverhill Road serving breads such as rolls and pastries before moving out onto Elmwood Avenue some years later becoming famous for baking donuts! The town of Waltham was settled in 1636 by Reverend John Eliot. The first settler in what is now Waltham was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1639. The town began to grow rapidly after it was granted a charter from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1646. In 1734, the towns of Lexington and Concord were founded nearby, and Waltham became the second town in Massachusetts to be chartered. It continued to grow rapidly until its incorporation as a municipality on March 15, 1852.
