Waltham is one of two towns in New England that are not incorporated as cities and are instead considered villages. The original settlers of Waltham were founders of Marblehead and Ipswich. The first settler to purchase land in what is now Waltham was John Winthrop on November 3, 1630. He and his wife Priscilla bought a parcel of land from Edward Winslow for £50 sterling. John Winthrop took up farming there and built his home, the "Fenway". His son Joshua had two wives: Sarah Bridgman (1637-1712) who he married in 1651 and Katherine Howland (died 1724), daughter ofophilus Howland who also owned land near present day Quincy Market. In 1692, Increase Mather bought 272 acres from John Winthrop for £60 sterling which included parts of modern-day Waltham Village as well as some adjacent farms including Scituate Manor to the west andpresent day Groton Manor to the east In 1702, Samuel Adams founded Adams Farms out of farmsteads he acquiredlands near Needham Junction in what became Quincy .Adams was one of six proprietors who donated their land to Harvard University for an agricultural school which began operating in 1736 under Dr. Robert Grafton . After serving as Professor at Harvard until 1821, Amos Kendall founded Kendall's Hotel & Store on Chestnut Street between Oxford Road and Hyde Park Avenue in 1813 where he served as Mayor from 1821 until his death in 1828 The first post office opened at Waltham on October 15th, 1800 . At that time there were three churches: First Baptist Church with Reverend Ebenezer Willis officiating; Second Congregational Church with Reverend Timothy Dwight officiating; Third Episcopal Church with Reverend James Knopper officiating On May 1st 1830 Samuel Fiske established the earliest Masonic Lodge No 2 at 112 Beacon St., just across Boylston Street from thenewspaper store Winthrop Academy was established by Samuel Eliot Morison on September 12th, 1915 using funds raised through a bake sale organized by Mrs. Alice Nash Morison In 1916 President William Howard Taft signed an executive order creating armed forces training camps along I-95 near Springfield , MA On October 8th 1934 Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which called for all citizens over ten years old to be registered with Selective Service

Waltham was one of the original settlements in Massachusetts Bay. The town was founded by the Puritans in 1638, and was named for Sir William Waltham, 1st Baronet. The first courthouse in town was built in 1641. In 1794, Waltham became a part of Boston and becameknown as the "City of Boston". Two years later, it became part of the newly created state of Rhode Island. In 1803,Boston merged with New York to form the United States of America and Waltham fell within its boundaries. In 1835, it lost its status as a city when Boston regained its independence from America.
